Here are some pictures of the AQ I took when she was at Pt. Pleasant this past Friday.

(click the links to see the photos, they may take a couple of seconds to load as they are jpeg, but they should all work)

-First pic I have taken of the boat in 6 years. 🙂 Long time no see...

-Captain at the wing controls right before the boat departed

-Stacks down ready for the railroad bridge

-Cleared the bridge easy with at least 10 feet or more room to spare

-Stacks up, and headed to Marietta, where she rendezvoused with the River Explorer

The pics aren't that great, because it had been a long time since I last saw the boat and didn't focus on getting good photos. She will be here alot this summer, and I plan on taking some more Wednesday. I thought the boat looked great with the red and blue paint in person, and I regret making the bad comments I made in the past about the Majestic America Line painting her like this. The boat looked very clean, and I am glad the AQ is back on the upper rivers.

Hi Nick,

Thanks for the AQ pix. Made me a little misty eyed. She is my first steamboat and I miss her a lot. Especially enjoyed seeing that steely eyed steamboatin Capt Dugger on the wing position.

I have mentioned a couple of times here that my best buddy, Phil Westbrook and I have a couple of river hobbies - pro baseball parks and diners/coffee shops.

There's a great old coffee shop in Point Pleasant, right on that main street, just steps from the boat. Frankly, the coffee was not so good. But the food was, well, WOWZIERS!

By the way. Best coffee shop? The late great Steamboatin' Cafe in Hannibal. Best diner? Hands down, it's Mickey's Diner in St Paul, featured prominently in the movie "Praire Home Companion".

Take care,
Paul

Thanks for the pictures, Nick. I'm glad your favorite boat will be in town so often this season. What are your plans, now that you are out of school? Mary

Thanks for the comments everyone, I missed the American Queen Wednesday, didn't get to see her. I got home around 4, and heard the boat depart at around 4:10 PM on my marine radio, and I went to go play basketball instead of steamboat chasing.

Paul, I have been to the coffee shop you are talking about. 🙂 I can't remember the name, becuase I have only been there once or twice a good while back. I remember it started with an M, and is someones name ("Molly's" something like that).

Mary, I did email the Majestic America Line to see if deckhand jobs were available, didn't get anything back from them. I did receive an automatic response that said they had received my application, even though I didn't fill out an application. I just sent an email asking questions through their FAQ email under "Employment Opportunities" (might give them a call). Maybe when the MQ starts running, more jobs will open up. I might work on the towboats some, and I am planning to go to a deckhand river training school this mid summer.

Hopefully someday I can work on a steamboat. 🙂
