I was in a used bookstore in Louisville recently (a rare experience for me these days) and came across a book on the DQ dated 1975. I quickly leafed through it and bought it. When I sat down with it at home to pick through more carefully I found the previous owner's name neatly written at the top of the cover page and was stunned! I'll let the photo speak for itself.8078.jpg

Capt. Roddy's Books

Dan, I'm glad you found one of Capt. Roddy Hammett's books to add to your collection. Following his untimely passing in 1995, his mother (now deceased) sold Roddy's historic riverside home, once occupied by Capt. Charles H. Elsworth and which was under renovation, at Waverly, West Virginia and entrusted a Marietta antique store to handle the sale of furniture, books and other items not dispersed amongst family members and friends.

Capt. Roddy's River Relics and Books

Dan, I'm really glad you found one of Capt. Roddy Hammett's books to add to your collection. Following his tragic and untimely passing in 1995, his mother, Mrs. Marguerite Hammett (now deceased) sold Roddy's historic riverside home (then under renovation) that once was occupied by Capt. Charles H. Ellsworth at Waverly, West Virginia. She entrusted a Marietta antique store to handle the sale of furniture, books, river artifacts and other items not dispersed amongst family and friends. Roddy would be pleased to know that his books are being enjoyed.

RJH = Robert James Hammett.

Roddy's engineering book

Dan, ask Kenny Howe the name of the book I gave him from Roddy - it was a historical engineering book. That picture of Roddy with the NATCHEZ whistle was taken enroute to Louisville for the Race back in spring 1982. Both Doc and Roddy's handwriting put most of us to shame - Doc's is pure calligraphy while Roddy's was more rounded and larger, sorry I can't describe it better, but when you got mail from either of them, you knew it immediately by the handwritten address.

DQ book

Dan, what is the name of the book on the DQ, or what is it about?

The book is "The Delta Queen: Last of the Paddlewheel Palaces"--came out in 1975. It appears to be something like a brief photo essay on the history of steamboats and the Delta Queen.

I received a letter from Doc once and was impressed (and not surprised) by his penmanship--even in the addresses on the envelope. I'm sorry I never had the chance to meet Capt. Hammett--heard so much about him.
