Steamboating colleagues:
Sad news RE: the passing of Don's mother at 93. I've known Don for eons and met his mother a number of times in/around the DQ and the old GREENE LINE wharfboat. My sincere sympathies from the family to Don and I'll add her name to our church prayer chain. I'll check the 'obits' here for time of service etc. I hope we don't see another 'series of three' as so often happens. Don, I'm thinking of you.

Don: Very sorry to hear of your loss. I was aware that she was not doing well. You and I both had our mothers long past the three score and ten. But that does not make the parting easier. God bless and sincere condolences from here on Gunpowder Road from Miss Carol, MISSIE, MISS BLUE and me. Cap'n Walnut
Don, my sincerest sympathy to you and your family. May God bless.
Frank
Captain Don, So sorry to hear. From what you say she lived a good full life. Know your river family is thinking of you and your family during this time.
Anna Margaret Sanders, River Gal
Thank you, all, for all these kind words. My mother, Anna Margaret, loved the river, and much of that love must have rubbed off on me. One summer, around the 4th of July, our sternwheeler, MARJESS, was still "on the ways" and needed painting before we could get the lovely paddlewheeler launched. As a 14 year old, I saved my pennies, nickles, and dimes until I had a dollar, and then the change was swapped for a silver dollar. My pile eventually reached 15 dollars high. Mother recruited me to help her get the boat ready, as dad was on the 3rd shift and wouldn't be available until the month passed.
Money was never in surplus at our house, and after the paint, brushes, and all were bought, lunch money was lacking. So each day, a silver dollar was taken from its place on the money pile, and with it, Mom bought bread, lunch meat, cheese, chips, and a pop apiece (a dollar went pretty far in those days). Everyday for two weeks, another dollar found it way to the delicatessen to feed the hungry crew of two.
By the time the silver dollars ran out, the MARJESS was painted and ready for the river just as Dad was winding down on the night watch, and getting ready to spend August on the river with us.
Memories of my first "shipyard days" spent with my mother remain some of the fondest recollections I have of my early days on the Ohio River.
As Dale recalled, Mom loved the DELTA QUEEN. Her Pittsburgh trip, with the family, and my first trip on the Upper Ohio as Captain of the Queen, was one of Mother's happiest memories. Later, she enjoyed taking rides with me on the GRAND VICTORIA II, across from their camp at Rabbit Hash, Kentucky.
It is so hard to lose one you love... especially a mother, but my mom died like she wanted: at home-- surrounded by those who loved her. She refused to go to the hospital as she knew she would never come out alive. She had the whole thing worked out...
Capt. Don , So Sorry For Your Loss !
Captain Don ,
So Sorry For Your Loss !
I realize first hand that there are just no words to bring comfort or relief to the grief and sting that you must be enduring right now !
Having said that when both my parents passed , I told first my Dad and then my brother that in OUR case their passing was both a blessing for both them and us !
As Always , All The Best !
Your Friend ,
