For those of us planning to see Franz, Carmen, and Leonie on their St.Paul-St. Louis cruise or afterward, somewhere on the UMR there is low water and the boat turned back downriver today and is reportedly heading to Cincinnati. So those of you on the Ohio will get to see them twice, those of us on the UMR will miss out entirely. I hadn't heard of any trouble spots on the UMR, has anyone else? I don't know how far up the boat came, but she locked downbound through 27 at 2:50 this afternoon.... this UMR is sure devoid of large passenger boats this year. Thank goodness for the TWILIGHT!
The QoM started in St. Louis on Saturday and I saw her on marinetraffic.com in Alton yesterday.
We´re busy replanning as our flights are into MSP. We don´t know the new schedule yet. As we´re flying on Thursday we won´t have any time to contact anyone along the new Ohio river route. But we´re happy to meet anyone showing up along the river!!
Carmen
What low water? Looking at the dam condition C of E report for this morning it looks like smooth sailing all the way to St. Paul. All dams running a good amount of water and no delays.
It was a surprise to me
I had no clue there was low water/grounding anywhere until hearing that the QoM was retreating. I even called the WJ and they had heard nothing. But the sternline telegraph still survives! Carrie Stier of the TWILIGHT reported that a towboat went aground in the channel near Camanche Iowa last week and that the CG buoy tender apparently did also. Maybe the river fell so fast it left too much silt there...we're getting a lot of rain today as well as north of us, but that probably wouldn't clear the area enough. So, we still haven't seen an overnight passenger boat here on the UMR this year.
Glad to hear that Carolyn is recuperating well at home!
Piloting Comes Natural...
A good thing about Franz, Carmen, and Leonie being sidetracked to Ciny, was they got to spend the day with us aboard the CLYDE. on our first shakedown cruise since the spunky sternwheeler had a major mechanical overhaul on her paddlewheel shaft and bearings. Cap'n Leonie (has she grown since the days aboard JIM"S DREAM) did most of the piloting and did a great job... as usual. That young lady is a natural behind the wheel of a sternwheeler.
No way to see them...
It was a good break for you, but unfortunately for those of us on the UMR it wasn't. And now your picture of Leonie is not showing. There is just a blue square/white question mark. Can you repost it for us deprived UMRers? Thanks.
Open the link to Franz's FB pics and then click on Leonie's pic to see more.
Friend request
Franz, Patti Ence just sent you a friend request - I can't open your Facebook page link.
For what it's worth, I get on the AQ on 8/22 in STL headed for STP and have not heard a peep about any changes. Maybe UMR will be OK by then?
UMR
Well, the Corps' m/v MISSISSIPPI with an 8 ft. draft made it to St. Paul this week...
My guess is that the QotM's props hang down under her hull and the company did not want to risk having the low hanging props damaged in any way. Last October the boat had to have emergency work preformed at St. Paul on her main propulsion units and did not want to risk a repeat.
Indeed she did. Debbie and I just returned home tonight after spending most of yesterday and this morning with Jonathan in St. Paul. And there she was, sitting safe and sound at Lambert Landing around 10:00 this morning. Also checked to see if JULIA BELLE SWAIN had been moved to the La Crosse riverfront yet on our return to Dubuque today. Still no JBS anywhere in sight along the main channel.

The MISSISSIPPI that is, and not the QUEEN OF THE MISSISSIPPI; she was at Newport, Kentucky this morning.
