Greetings From New Orleans ,
Today , the 27th.of October , I am on a south bound chemical tanker , the good ship , Stolt Jade , out of St. Gabriel , La. and for one reason or another , I stated wondering just how many state capitals are located on the Mississippi and or the Western River system ? In all honestly , I had to check to make sure but I think that you will be a bit surprised . It just may be more than you first think ! Also , one more bit of rather useless trivia is the fact that the Louisian state captial building located in Baton Rouge , was built during the term of former Gov. Huey P. Long , and as his inflated ego demanded , the te sate caital building is just over 450' feet high , the highest state capital building in the nation . Are you surpirsed ??

Capital Marine - Baton Rouge

Greetngs Once Again !
One more bit of trivia , if you look closely in the attached picture , you will see the Capital Marine , Baton Rouge , barge fleet where it was not that many years ago that the Str. Delta Queen use to tie off to when she was in Baton Rouge . Also , I am not sure when this took place but when I was on the " Queen " the landing barge at Captial Marine , was the old steam towboat , Iowa . The Str. Iowa , is no longer the landing barge there and has been replaced by an old Scott Chotin towboat and its also my understanding that the Iowa is now the landing barge at the Zito Fleet , which is located on the east bank of the river just below the Huey P. Long Bridge . What I allways liked about landing on the Iowa , was at the time , she still had her Hog Chains in tact and she still had her fore and aft sheer that few boats now have . Just a bit more trivia folks .
Smoothe Sailing !

I assume all do not have to be on a presently navigable stream but simply on the "Western Rivers" system. My guess using the map in my head is 16. With 8 on a presently commercially navigable river. As Dale says," but what do I know".

Fancy Feast

When I was a lad on my first steamboat trip down on the Lower Mississippi River on the Steamer AVALON, we had a charter that included most of the roster of the blue bloods of Baton Rogue. After the ride was over and the AVALON was landed against what was probably the hulk of the Str. IOWA that Cap'n Ted so aptly described, and when most everyone was off our boat and ashore, I was standing alone on the wharfboat when a very distinguished lady came along and she was making over some kittens that called the IOWA home.

When one friendly yellow kitty caught the fine lady's eye and begged to be taken home with her to better accomodations, a white gloved hand reached down and picked up the clever little fellow and placed him into her purse.

"Maybe you better not be taking that cat, lady," I ventured to say.

Looking down her nose, the fine woman sniffed,

"Why, he belongs to me. In fact they all do. I'm Mrs. Chotin."

And off they went together. I would have sworn I saw a fuzzy yellow face peek out of the folds of Mrs. C's huge purse and stuck its tiny pink tongue out at me.

I respectfully have to disagree with Capt. Ted. All on his list are correct except Helena. In addition to his list here are some more.

River
Missouri-----Jefferson City Missouri
Iowa--------DesMoine Des Moine
Illinois-------Springfield Sangamon
Ohio--------Columbus Scioto
Kentucky----Frankfort Kentucky
S. Dakota---Pierre Missouri
N. Dakota---Bismark Missouri
Alabama----Montgomery Alabama

And maybe Mississippi as Jackson is on the Pearl River

My recent post did not post like I typed it. The third column did not post as written. That list was of the rivers the capitals are on.

Just curious, was Capt. Ted talking about Helena, Montana on the Missouri?

Helena is Helena Montana on the upper reaches Missouri River. Jackson would not be on this list because the Pearl River drains into the Lake Borgne Channel, Mississippi Sound System.

However, you forgot.....

Topeka, KS; Kansas River
Indianaoplis, IN; White River (Wabash River System)

Bill , Congratulations ! Job Well Done !

BIll ,
Congratulations ! Job Well Done ! And I Salute You ! I am just so pleased that you took the time and effort to more thoroughly look into this Trivia Question and come up with the correct answer . For one reason or another I was of the impression that Helena , Montana was on the Missouri River . Also , thank you very much for adressing me as Captain Ted and I do appreciate the respect , but among friends and that is by the way how I feel on this message board , titles make me feel a bit uncomfortable , but Thank You , regardless ! Personally , I feel that only CAPTAIN Wagner and CAPTAIN Don Sanders both have earned and deserve that title ! CONGRATULATIONS once again !
All The Very Best ,
Ted davisson
