Nice pix
I see the road is dry but passengers certainly don't have to walk up much cobblestone levee. The picture of the plane stunt reminds me of one of the first pictures I took on board my first DQ trip, which left out of St. Louis. I was standing back by the calliope, naturally, and an Ozark jet was passing overhead on the landing pattern to Lambert. I took the picture of it, thinking what a difference in speed of the boat I was on and the jet overhead...St. Louis was my favorite departure city because there was always a crowd down there on the levee and on the Arch steps - there not just for the DQ but for all the other attractions that used to be on the levee. And Dan Forman would play Meet Me in St. Louis followed by Take Me Out to the Ballgame as we departed, - there's another of my favorite DQ moments!
Yes, the road is dry. They've taken opened the floodgates and fully reopened the street. The streets department did a "light cleaning" as there is still a lot of sand and dust at the curbs and sidewalks. The river stage is around 25 feet. So, the passengers do indeed have it easier. It's just a short walk to level ground or the steamcoach.
The two boats are outside the festival perimeter. The entry to the festival is just past the bow of the QOM.
I thought I had stumbled upon a calliope concert a little while ago. But, as I walked further, I discovered that it was an ice cream truck, playing that annoying tune. Bummer.
Seaman the dog is still under water. But, both Lewis and Clark are able to get air, at least.
As I remember the STL gage was 24.4 today with a .03 rise----as reported in the P-D . I did not check the ACOE reading. As Darin's pictures showed the AQ was better "dressed" with banners for the Season. The QoM had only one banner on the Port side that I could see. I did not talk to either of boat crew on Wharf Street. I was rather amazed at at how relatively quiet the lower end of the wharf was in the 1545 time frame.
OoM was taking water from a hydrant w/reducer/backflow prevenbter valve in a 1/2 in hose. AQ 2in hose was flat. Forgot to check out their backflow apparatus. Three "steambusses were in attendance. Interesting one bore Maryland license plates, one Louisiana plates, bus #LM 141.
Didn't see anyone walking about on the outer decks of the QoM. A couple here and there on AQ. It is an absolutely beautiful afternoon in Downtown STL after a rather foggy & haze filled morning.
In my humble opinion the gold colored egg shaped "decoration" on top of the AQ Pilothouse looks a little garish and takes away from the general good looks of the boat.
Bad week on the Upper Miss. One person lost in an accident at lock 7. Barge breakaway at lock 26 early this a.m.
Jim, you are right, it was a beautiful day. Not your typical July weather. On the QOM, there's a few patriotic banners grouped in threes on the port side and stern of it. As for people, it was deader than a ghost town on the QOM. Except for the two crew members manning the stage, in the sun, no one was around. The AQ crew members, under a tent, were faring quite better. The AQ, at least, looked alive. There were crew and passengers milling about, coming and going. The steamcoach was nearby, too. I will agree that the south riverfront was pretty empty. Except for the steamboats and the service vehicles for the Fair, there weren't a lot of people. I did see some riverfront bicycles toodling about, though. The Fair doesn't go down that far anymore, so people don't walk that way much. I suspect that it will be full of fireworks spectators tonight, though.
As for the decoration on top of the AQ's pilot house, I believe it's been there since the beginning. It was probably cleaned up for the relaunch last year. But, it is not new. I did notice it more than in the past. Perhaps the colors are bolder.
Hoses
That's quite a difference in hoses! Like a garden hose compared to a fire hose. Must take the QoM ages to get any water on board. Do they make some of their water?
Fat fingered the numerals. Should have read 1&1/2in. hose.---linen jacket fire hose w/blue painted brass couplings. Sorry for the error.
