Pardonme if this is already posted somewhere, but an article I wrote 2 months ago about the demise of 4 steamboats appeared today, while I am out of touch on the SPIRIT OF PEORIA CRUISE. I don;t have the exact link, maybe Carmen canhelp. But it is Quad-City Times: Quad Cities, IA/IL and look for On the River. More on this trip later. I don;t have my laptop. But these unprecented rains and summer flooding are playing havoc with the schedule. We will not boat to St.L., rather bus in from Hardin on the Illinois, which is flooded but not as bad as the UMR. However we are having the usual great time and Capt. Alex and crew are going above and beyond (and sometimes down and under water) to make this cruise work.
I have been unable to find this article, and, am very interested in it. If you have a direct link that would be great. If it is easier you can e-mail me @ [email protected], thanks so much, Kevin
Article
Apparently they didn't post it online, as no one has been able to find it and Carmen hasn't posted it either. I just got back from the SoP trip and saw the article for the first time last night. I realize one is at the mercy of the editor, and there was quite a bit of rewriting as well as cutting. But I have a message in to the editor to discuss this: They changed my statement about the DQ's exemption needed due to her wooden superstructure, to: "Majestic America lost the exemption the the wooden-hulled Delta Queen needed to operate on American rivers." I am trying to find out why they changed a fact to a fiction - that goes beyond the range of editing privileges as far as I'm concerned. When the editor returns my call, I will ask about the online edition.
Judy,
That´s why I didn´t post anything as I wasn´t able to find it either :-).

not online
I just talked to the page editor who said that On the River is not put online anymore. We also got the wooden-hulled bit straightened out - my article was sent to someone else originally and that person 'doctored' the superstructure to hull bit, so the page editor was not at fault. The way I figured out the doctoring: when they changed superstructure to hull, they forgot to retype the rest of the sentence. I wouldn't have submitted something with an incomplete sentence! Anyway, the page editor is going to correct that in the archived edition so in the future if anyone writes about the DQ and uses this article for reference, it will be correct. I imagine this explains how the misconception persists and expands - a writer will look at previous articles for background, not check the validity before using the information.
