In the past on Howard's "River Ramblin" days, many attendee's rode the BELLE OF LOUISVILLE's puiblic trip before the program at the museum got under way. For those who plan to do the same this year, a special treat is in store, Chief Kenny Howe will be engineering the BELLE that day. So if you are going to ride the BELLE, be sure to stop by the engine room and say "hello" to Kenny. Who knows, he may give you the grand tour.

What about the Sunday afternoon trip too? Or is 'working' two consecutive days not in Chief's retirement plans? Presumably this job will not keep him from attending the Bates' festivities at the Howard? And by the way, as usual we are planning to gather at the Kingfish for dinner after the Howard session, and that is to be followed by an 'afterglow' at the Towne House Suites on Saturday evening. Just for calculating refreshments, who is planning to attend the Saturday events? You can email me: [email protected]. ( Besides the refreshments for the motel, of course I need to gauge how many chocolate chip cookies to bake for the Main Event.)
Cookie Count. . . .Well, Judy, since Linda & I can't be there, that's about a dozen less to bake!!

David "Cookie Monster" Dewey
PS We'll be there in spirit though, so some cookies may just "disappear" 🙂

Judy, I plan to come hear Captain Bates, however I'm lost when it comes to anything else. My father might also be accompanying me, it just depends on the weather and if the C.Belle is running a full schedule. Hopefully I won't be a cast away being from NY.
New Yorkers
Heck, you're not a cast away just because you're from New York! Why, I'm even letting the other NY Matt stay at my place before our SPIRIT OF PEORIA trip! The Kingfish restaurant is a block from the Towne Suites and Fairfield hotels, and is only a mile or so from the Howard Museum. And its on the river, of course. See you Saturday.
Belle of Louisville
Judy, would you recommend going on the lunch trip on the Belle of Louisville, will it be back before the event, also do I need to make reservations to go onboard? I'd love to go on another steamboat, I'm just unfamiliar with the area, hopefully you could shed some light for me.
BELLE
Keith always schedules the talks for 3 PM so that people can ride the BELLE first. Many will be doing that. She goes out from 12-2, and that gives you plenty of time to get over to the Howard. Just don't waste time sitting inside eating lunch. Buy a cruise only and get a steamboat hot dog and popcorn and sit on deck or visit Chief Kenny in the Engine Room. On Sunday, the BELLE goes out from 2-4. The entrance to the parking lot is a bit tricky - watch the signs carefully or you'll end up on the ramp to the interstate. No reservations needed, just buy the ticket at the wharf.
Hello All!
Looks like a very exciting steamboatin' weekend!
My plans are to ride the BELLE both Saturday and Sunday (at this point), be over at the Howard for Capt. Bates' speech (I am really looking forward to hearing his stories!), and dinner on Sat night at the Kingfish.
If anyone needs a ride from downtown Louisville to the Howard Museum, let me know via email and I will plan to carry you along. I have a 7-passenger van...so I have room for at least 5 other people.
On the subject of the BELLE OF LOUISVILLE...Judy is right, you don't need reservations for the cruise. However, if you are interested in the buffet lunch (either day) you do have to have paid reservations at least 24 hours before the cruise. They do not sell the meal the day of the cruise or aboard the vessel. The caterer this year is Halls Catering and I must say, they have great food!! It is worth it if you think there is any need for sustinance beyond concessions aboard the boat.
Travis
Talked to Chief Kenny Howe this morning and he will be on watch in the engine room of the BELLE on BOTH Saturday and Sunday, so be sure to stop by and say hello. And don't forget the "Main Deck Museum" where there are dandy displays of framed steamboat photos on the bulkheads, as well as the large metal "A", made by Capt. Doc Hawley, that formerly adorned the spreader bar between the stacks when the boat was the AVALON. The golden antlers, used as the trophy for MANY steamboat races between the BELLE & DQ, are also exhibited there, having been replaced.
Above all, get your "STEAMBOAT FIX", with all the sights, sounds and smells that ONLY an honest to goodness, living, breathing STEAMBOAT can provide!!! And do it WHILE YOU STILL CAN!
Steamboat, don't buffet...
Yes, there is so much to take in on the BELLE, which is why I recommended Matt not do the lunch bit - to me it is a waste of time sitting inside eating when there are so many things to see and do on a two hour trip. Hot dogs are portable and quick!
Matthew: We'll be delighted to have you and your father visit the museum. We have a place in our gift shop for brochures promoting other river museums and riverboats, so please feel free to bring any publicity material for the CHAUTAUQUA BELLE and we'll be happy to put it out.
Looking forward to meeting you on Saturday!

Maybe I'll even find the original pilot wheel from the Chautauqua Belle, or the table it had now become!
The weather gods will be smiling on Howard's this Saturday according to the latest forecast, mostly sunny with a high of 71 and a low of 59....can't get any better than that in mid-July.
Matthew,
if you show up on the Belle of Louisville and introduce yourself you'll be King for a Day. Get there about ten AM. You will like Kenny Howe and the rest of the crew.
By ten AM I mean 10 AM. Give yourself time to gossip with the crew before they get too busy. It is all very casual and relaxed, so don't be shy. When those guys find out you OWN a steamboat you will own a piece of the Belle of Louisville.

I shall be there, I'm just leaving Chautauqua now, depending on the driving I'll either drive straight threw and stay over when I get there, or I'll hold up along the highway. Look forward to seeing you all.
Alan, PLEASE bring the Alphorn to the Howard Museum and give a toot or two. I would be a fascinating way to start the program.
Jim, also the big DQ crewmember reunion aboard the Delta Queen this weekend!
