Hello there everyone. I am trying to find Captain Michael Giglio. I believe he did some work with the Becky Thatcher Sternwheel (moored in Marietta, Ohio). Any information would be great. Thanks,
Lisa
Dear Lisa Kennedy:
I know of a Michael Giglio in the Marietta, Oh area who has been a member of S&D of Pioneer Rivermen and did some repairs on the paddlewheel of the BECKEY THATCHER in Marietta. I've no idea if the Michael I know is a 'captain.' I'd suggest consulting GOOGLE or the Marietta, Oh directories. I know of two Michael Giglios in the Cincinnati area. Good luck.

R. Dale Flick,
I have checked the directories in Marietta, nothing. I have Googled, nothing. I have called two Giglio in Cincinnatti, one answered, he did not know him. The other hasn't answered yet. My Mother is interested in purchasing the Becky Thatcher and he was listed as "Captain" at one time. I believe he might have some valuable information that would help in her purchase. Thank you
The Mike Giglio to whom Dale referred in Marietta was certainly no Captain of the Becky... if you really want info on the boat, contact Keith Norrington. Email me for his address. [email protected]
The last I heard of Mike Giglio he had moved to the Phillipines. He was responsible for rebuilding the dilapidated sternwheel of the BECKY, made possible by a grant from the J. Mack Gamble Fund of the Sons and Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen. For some unknown reasons, the wheel was split, which is NOT historically accurate for the boat and looks rather unusual to put it mildly. I suggest you contact Mr. Harry Robinson in Marietta, who was largely responsible for buying and bringing the boat there in 1975 for Ohio Showboat Drama. He could refer you to other sources with up to date information.
Wasn't he a Striker in the DELTA QUEEN engineroom for a very short time? Mr. G. was a truck driver by trade some said.
Last time I saw Mike he was living in Silverton, Ohio (Greater Cincinnati), and, yes, he is (was) a truck driver.
Dear Lisa & steamboating colleagues:
The Michael Giglio I knew in Marietta, Ohio was not a licensed captain. I searched my records and find he has not renewed his organizational membership via U.S. Money Order in several years. Indeed, he was an over-the-road truck driver for some time relating many interesting and humorous adventures. I do recall a mention of him being on the DELTA QUEEN as a striker for a short period of time. Michael had many river 'projects' in his mind from time to time and would correspond with me and others.
Lisa, on your behalf I would suggest you pursue the quest for information Re: the BECKY THATCHER with the suggested name in these postings in addition to consulting with your financial people and those offering the boat for sale. I hold no MBA in business, but would suggest also retaining a lawyer in corporate affairs and, possibly, an Admiralty Lawyer. The independent services of a licenced marine surveyor would also be a prudent move. You are venturing into an interesting quest/enterprise and I hope you keep us all posted.

Thank you everyone for the information. My mom and I are trying very hard to research the Becky Thatcher. We have recently found that the owner may not even be legally allowed to sell it and are looking deeper into that. We wish to keep it in Marietta and return it to as much as original as possible. We have a lawyer retained and a licensed marine surveyor on the way (my mom is meeting with him next week in Marietta). We truly hope to obtain this boat!!! Any other information someone might have would be greatly appreciated. You can email me personally if you wish not to post it: [email protected]. Thanks everyone and I will keep you posted.
Lisa: There are a lot of people looking for Mike Gigilo. Secondly I hope the surveyor is an inland rivers type, not a blue water guy. That boat needs a ton of work !!!
Discreetly put, on both counts!!!!!
Lisa: If you and your mother should become the new owners of the BECKY, please be advised that the big wooden high bench currently on the main deck (first deck) is the "lazy bench" from the pilothouse - where crew and visitors could sit and observe the river at an elevated level so they could see over the pilotwheel, etc. The bench is one of only a very few original artifacts remaining on the boat and should be saved. Previous owners almost tossed it out, thinking it was "just an old shoeshine bench"!!!
