As I type, a reception is going on in the Magnolia Suite on the NATCHEZ, honoring Edna James and Iola Booker on their retirements. If you've ever set foot in the dining room, you've met them! Edna started in 1975, along with her cohort the late Geneva Robinson, and Iola came over from the PRESIDENT in 1976. It was these ladies who made me feel welcome and allowed me to accept a summer position in the dining room without qualms in 1984. Their dedication to the NATCHEZ and willingness to do whatever was necessary will be hard to match. Although the hours were long and the loads heavy that we hauled around the dining room, we had a good time working together. I was privileged to serve in their crew for six years before moving to the gift shop. The three of us would often be responsible for all the finger food (can't spell h'ord...) for charters. We could put together 3000 finger sandwiches during one trip down in our Mag Suite assembly line. As F&B manager, some times officially, always unofficially, Edna was able to cover every situation regardless of what newbies might have left undone or unaccounted for. Iola was the Energizer Bunny - never sat down, always doing something, even during breaks. These two epitomize why the NATCHEZ is successful, and one of the few remaining steamboats...whatever it takes. It won't be the same without these ladies. Thanks for the memories, my M&F Catering partners!
