Hello! Are there any crew members or officers on board the DQ who remember me? Please let me know as the boat will be in Natchez on Labor Day and I want to get on board for a, hopefully not, last tour. Thanks all,
Margaret Peabody

Hi Margaret,

Deb and I will be onboard the DQ next week. I'm not sure if it still works but you can try to have either of us paged by the purser via radio from the stage security desk. If the crew can find us and will let us down to the bow to escort you, I'd be glad to bring you onboard. This has worked in the past, though I don't have a clue if it's still allowed.

Thanks for introducing me to the masterworks of John Stobart. of which the Delta Queen benefited. Your Dad's SK12 (I believe) was pretty nifty to ride in)

Hartford Under-the-Hill

Margaret,

Remember the time we went up-the-hill to the Under-the-Hill Saloon with John Hartford so he could hear your Natchez friends’ band play? John brought along his own instruments and began an impromptu concert, but a group of revelers at the table behind our's had drunk too deeply of the delights of Mr. Andre' Farish’s hostelry and soon their revelry rivaled the best that Harford could muster. So in true John Hartford fashion, he packed up his gear and returned to the DELTA QUEEN tied at the foot of Silver Street. It was too bad he never hear your friends play.

I do indeed remember and I recall being really pissed! John Hartford died not too long ago, didn't he? Now, you must reveal your true identity to me again please!

Its been a long time!

Hi Margaret! This is "Professor" Pete Eveland as Vic Tooker used to refer to me. I remember you well and have often wondered where you were. I knew you as a passenger on the boat. I knew you had landed a job on it, but that was after my time. I remember the time we pulled into Natchez and you had a convertible that took several of us up the hill to the Holiday Inn. I know Terry Severens was with us, but can't remember who else. I wasn't used to drinking and was too self-conscience to fast dance. However, after five bloody Mary's I can remember fast dancing to the music of the Doobie Brothers, "Listen to the Music!" We made it back to the DQ in time for me to play at the rail with the the band for the send off. For some reason, Vic handed me his gold Vega banjo to play. I was scared to death that I was going to drop it. Needless to say, I learned a valuable lesson about drinking that night. I think it was two weeks before I felt normal again 🙂

I have fond memories of meeting your parents Howard and Peggy, and visiting their plantation. I seem to recall that during a flood one year, the DQ disembarked people at their plantation. Is that true, or did I dream that? I hope life has been good to you!

Best,

Pete Eveland

I wasn't a crew member, just a beginning passenger in your days on the DQ as the one non-Tooker in the band, until Dan arrived in '74. Those great times led me to a total of 41 DQ trips over the years. Seems to me that you were heading for the ministry back then, did that occur? Here's a pix taken at St. Paul in Aug. 1975 of the band doing a promo with the St. Paul Winter Carnival People(not in pix). That's Vic Tooker on banjo, Pete in the bright red pants, looks like he's got a clarinet in hand, Dan Forman and Terry Severns with tambourines, Pop Tooker on trumpet, and Mom Tooker on bass. See http://www.steamboats.org/forum/showthread.php?p=8063#post8063 for more pix of Pete....

Hi Judy,

Thank you for sharing this picture. Those red pants are a hoot! Is that Bill Muster towards the right front corner?

I actually was in the ministry for five wonderful years. I was a senior associate minister for the First Christian Church of Phoenix. It was a large church, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, with three pipe organs, one of which was a theatre pipe organ donated by Merle Norman of the cosmetics fame. With a congregation of 3300 members and a choir that annually toured europe, it was a fabulous place to work. My mentor there, Dr. William S. Boice, was the most decorated chaplain in WWII. He was also a conservatory trained musician. I found during my tenure in Phoenix, that I really enjoyed counseling. We had our own staff psychologist that mentored me as well and encouraged me to go back to school. As it turned out, my father became ill and I returned to Ohio to help in the family business. After his passing, I went back to school and earned a doctorate in counseling from the University of Cincinnati. Since that time I have been a senior administrator and member of the faculty for two allopathic colleges of medicine. As Paul Harvey would say, "and thats the rest of the story." 🙂

Thanks for asking. Have a great day!

Pete

That's an interesting followup to a life on a steamboat. Yes, that is Bill Muster taking the pictures. Betty Blake is there someone too out of the camera range.

Hi Captain! I worked under you in the Purser's office '77/'78. Are you interested in purchasing Stobart's? My father gave me about 5 or so. One or two I may keep. I'll see what I have when I return to Huntsville AL (home) next week. It was nice to hear from you!

Ragtime piano player

Anyone know who the ragtime piano player was on the Delta Queen in the early 90's? He had some of his own compositions, kind of a layed back fellow if I remember. He had a nice touch. Does he still entertain on the Delta Queen?

I think you've described Hoyle Osborne to a "T". If Hoyle is indeed who you mean, I can tell you that he and I were partners in the Paddlewheel Lounge on the last, or should I say the most recent, season of the Mississippi Queen in 2006.

Neither of us are on the boats now. He lives in New Mexico and works in that area. We correspond regularly and, again, if he's the guy you mean, I'll tell him you were asking for him.
