The Riverboat TWILIGHT's regular schedule is two day trips between LeClaire and Dubuque Iowa. But this year over the Fourth of July and Labor Day weekends, she ran one day round trips between Dubuque and Guttenberg. On Thursday the 28th I was privileged to ride upriver with the deck crew as they repositioned her in Dubuque. On Monday the 1st David and Jonathan Tschiggfrie were the invited guests on the downbound return trip. Thanks to Capt. Kevin and Carrie Stier for this great opportunity. Here are some 'behind the scenes' shots that aren't experienced during a regular cruise:

1) It wasn't a relaxing trip for the crew. Here is Capt. Kevin's to-do list for the day.
2) A big order of t-shirts came in, along with the need to reorganize the Gift Shop for the fall cruises.
3) Here we have 2 t-shirt folders: the human and a plastic folding guide thingy so that they are all folded evenly. I had folded many a t-shirt on the NATCHEZ, but freehand, so I just stayed out of their way.9386.jpg9387.jpg9388.jpg

more deadheading

1) Capt. Kevin having lunch in his 'office'
2) The glamourous part of a deckhand's job.
3) The not so glamourous part - Kevin had been eyeing an old daymark on the shore and so we put in to retrieve it. Unfortunately the stage didn't quite reach the dry land, and the daymark apparently had been used in a campfire. But Lizzy brought it on board anyway. She is actually walking on the stage which isn't visible underwater here.9389.jpg9390.jpg9391.jpg

more deadheading

1) Grilled shrimp skewers, jambalaya and chocolate chip cookies were on the lunch menu.
2) One of my show and tell items I brought was an album of photos of the locks and dams in the RI district being built in the 1930s. Here Kevin is sharing pix of 12 at Bellevue with the lockmen at Lock 12.
3) 5 of the crew members awaiting their ride over to their 'home' in East Dubuque. The company has a large house near the marina where the crew stays on the overnight trips.9392.jpg9393.jpg9394.jpg

Scenes from the Guttenberg public trip

The landing area afforded some scenic shots. We were able to walk around the town for about an hour before heading back to Dubuque. The TWILIGHT provided a shuttle bus for those passengers who didn't want to negotiate the short climb to Main St., and took them several blocks to the L&D 10 site. A small section of the sandy beach was covered with clam shells which had circular holes cut in them - obviously from the 'pearl' button days.9395.jpg9396.jpg9397.jpg

more Guttenberg

1) A mural of the DELTA QUEEN was painted on the side of one of the businesses and a picture of her in Lock 10 in 1950 was displayed in the window, courtesy of Kathy Lake, one of Guttenberg's most well-known citizens and river rats.
2) Neil Horton awaiting the returning passengers.
3) The end of my 2 day adventure... but the TWILIGHT's season is not over. She is running the two day trips through the end of October.
Next season starts around the Memorial Day weekend. Several people on here were in a group which rode about 4 years ago, and someone expressed an interest in doing that again. If anyone is interested, let me know and we can put a group together for next season.9399.jpg9400.jpg9401.jpg
