I'm getting excited about this day! Going to be a blast and finally able to put some more faces to names. I'll have some room in a vehicle if needed, I might see about meeting the boat in Grandview, IN the day before too.
Phillip
Pat: I haven't looked at your schedule closely, but there IS one lock between Madison and Cincinnati (Markland)
Cap'n Walnut
Paul, I don't want to compete w/the "Real" tours, this is just a group of friends meeting friends for a "day on the town" -- which is why I'm using "Toure" to describe it!
Now, just because the "town" consists of the Howard and the BOL. . . Well, gee, what can I say? Besides, I think it will be more fun to meet y'all and yack on the drive over & back. Hmm, seems like I'm sorta organizing this diversion, so would y'all who's gonna meet us email me, and also if you're gonna ride the BOL with us, think we can get a rate for our group (hey, I'm nuttin' if not CHEAP! -- No, not frugal, CHEAP! I even know how to do this on the computer: ¢ Heh Heh Heh) Oh, yeah, my email: [email protected]
Phillip,
YES, I think we can use the space, and we'd be happy to see you the day before--Hmm, what do we need to do to get you onboard for a visit?? It looks like Grandview is a morning stop (about 8-1--who knows, after all, we're steamboatin'!!) Tour that day is to the Lincoln boyhood home, so don't know who is staying & going. . .
"Oh boy, Oh Boy, Oh Boy, Hurk, We's Steamboatin'!!!!"
WOWZIERS!!!
I think I'm getting as excited about this trip as our first trip--is that possible? Only diff. is I KNOW they're gonna have to drag me off'n the boat at Cincy!
And to think y'all thought I might not like it back last year. . .
S'
David D & Linda too!
Gee, I think I can just see her now. . .
Thanks Tom,
I edited my schedule to include the lock at Markland.
I'm still going to call Majestic on Monday morning to see if they have a new "official" schedule. If we get Grandview included that would be a lot of fun. The more stops the better for us. We love the towns as much as the boats.
Pat
David,
Pat Traynor is already working on getting me on the boat, she's my "onboard contact" so to speak.
Pat, thanks for the info on mileage between stops, my mileages are from the DQSC Steamboatin' River Log, and the mileages I suspect are similar.
Now the thing I don't get is the 3 different arrival and departure times posted here. My times are directly from a crew schedule that was printed out very early this spring...I guess it probably has changed by now. I suspect the true schedule is in the Capt and pilots heads...and probably hasn't been finalized down to the exact hour as we speak...But some times are very suspect, for instance the start of the cruise, i.e. the first night, we never leave that early, 5 PM...the earliest I've ever seen is 6:00 PM, the crew schedule I have says 9 pm, which is also very strange, usually it's (sometimes) 6:00 PM or (mostly) 7:30 PM.
And one more thing to ponder on the schedule, as I mentioned there are some tight squeezes at a railroad swing bridge and another rainroad draw bridge that was a little reluctant to raise that held us up for some time, both near/at Clarksville...and the Cumberland is a twisty little one, not sure if the speeds you mentioned can be maintained even WITH the current, as there are some tight turns...
Phillip,
OK, if anyone can do it, Pat can, she's much more familiar with these things than I!
Looking forward to seeing you then!!
David
Bruno,
"My schedule" was only to see if was "possible" to get to Louisville on Sunday as some are saying we are. It looks like it is possible.
However, I just called Majestic AGAIN. They are insisting that we are leaving Nashville on Wed at 5pm and that we will be stopping at Dover, Paducah, Henderson, Madison, and Cincinnati.
On previous calls to Majestic they have said that we are leaving the dock at 10pm on Tuesday, 19th, and "going somewhere" and then coming back to Nashville at noon on Wed before leaving again at 5pm.
If someone who reads this actually has access to what the Delta Queen is telling the crew then this can be put to rest.
I'll just be happy to be on a wonderfully scenic, peacefully quiet, meandering cruise on the marvelous Delta Queen no matter where we go or where we stop.
Pat
I have read on a previous post that Steve Garvey will be on the Delta Queen during the Aug 19th cruise. I got the impression that he might be part of a cruise package someone had gotten together.
Will he be speaking publicly on the cruise? Is everyone invited to attend? Will their be other public discussions about the DQ and its history?
Thanks,
Pat
Yeah, that is the plan we've heard. Stan will be onboard and talking to us on the cruise, and from what I hear all of us river rats will be enhancing his talk, sorta question and answer for the newbies onboard that have questions about our experiences. Now Deb and I have only been cruising since 2000, and as Dale says, paraphrasing, "what do we know", but a few others have been cruising a whole bunch longer...should be a great time, great stories, a great educational experience. There is even a rumor that one passenger will be giving a powerpoint comparison between the Delta King today and the Delta Queen today, the mouth waters!
The cruise will be with a group/charter with History Channel Magazine, a group hosted by Charlene Corris. She posted here about a bazillion years ago with a great rate on the ol' gal and we all jumped on it. At least 10 dot.orgers will be on board representing about a hundred thousand past cruises 🙂 And I pray for Charlene, I don't think she realizes what an enthusiastic group of characters we are!
It's gonna be a blast...Between me and David, who Pat Traynor loving refers to as the two of us terrorizing the boat, it's gonna be great times. Then again, how could Deb and I not have a great time with so many, many wonderful dot.org friends?
And I gotta add the traditional invitation...if any dot.orgers are on the August 19th cruise, don't be a stranger, poke me or Deb in the ribs and introduce yourselves. Deb and I are in 320 (sorry David I did tell you 330, I was wrong), the Deweys in 338, the Mullens in a cabin on the Port Texas, I'm thinking 217 but not sure, and Pat Traynor I'm thinking Texas Starboard somewhere in a "G" bunk bed room. Ginnie and Ralph Rhynders are also on board, not sure where... Please knock, all of us have those infamous, sometimes criticised, sometimes made fun of door plaques that announce who is occupying the stateroom, we'd love to get to know you. In the Texas look for the guy with the moustache with the PSSOA nametag suckin' on a Sam Adams. When the band plays in the Texas at 4 most afternoons Deb and I will be on bar stools, closest to Tom Kasperek the drummer, and grinning like fools...this will be the cruise!!
And yes there will be kites, David's the man! Damn, we're excited, a week and a half to go...why does this inanimate object effect us so, I am so in love, I think Deb shares my sentiments...
And we're in 335 almost right behind Linda and David. Please stop by and visit our commodious abode!!
See you all soon.
Ginnie
Party Time, Sundeck Aft!!! 🙂
I'll have a powerpoint comparing the DQ & DK as they are today, along with some photos of old postcards & I dunno what all yet, puttin' it together this weekend!
S'
David D.
PS, think our "time" is Friday AM.--Unless they make us "walk the stage" first!! 🙂 (Hey, this is a steamboat, we don' need no plank!)
And I know where the Calliope key is. . . .
PARTY!!
Bruno,
We're practically gonna be neighbors! I know, isn't everyone on a boat this small?
Anyway, Karen and I are in 330, exactly opposite of where we were in 2000 when we cruised from New Orleans to Memphis.
We, too, love this beautiful old boat. We hope we are wrong in telling everyone that this is last year it will cruise.
Pat
I'm sure most of you know about this website but I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere on steamboats.org.
A few posts down is an article titled: Captain Gabe Chengery visits the Delta Queen.
It sounds like most of you have been cruising the Delta Queen all summer long so you must have met up with Bill Weimuth, the historian aboard the DQ this season. I hope some of his CDs are on sale on the boat. They look interesting.
Pat
Pat,
Unfortunately Bill Wiemuth emailed us today that he won´t be aboard for this cruise. He only has a few weeks off during the whole season and unfortunately this will be one.
