OK Fred Carmichael, to quote TV show host Art Baker:
You Asked For It
so here are more pix of the DQ crew in 1977 and 1978
We start with calliope players, and we had many multitalented crew members
1) Dan Forman Dan was the main calliope perfessor, and played piano for dinner and in the band. He lives in Cincinnati and has become quite a homemade pasta expert.
2) Fred Dodd Fred was the banjo player and was the calliope player for the Carter trip until Vic Tooker saw the TV coverage he was getting and Vic then took over for the rest of the trip. Fred and wife Debbie live in Wisconsin, in the Steinikes' neighborhood.
3) Calliope Keith - he was watchman for the 1978 season but made frequent appearances at the keyboard.
You'll note the second keyboard and masked cases next to the console. These were the unifone, uniphon, however its spelled.

More calliope players
1) Lexie Palmore at the keyboard in Cape Girardeau Mo. This was in 1977 - were you Mate yet at that point, Lexie?
2) Capt. Gabe Chengery Gabe was Master on this trip into Pittsburgh. It was the first time he brought the DQ in to his hometown as Master, and we had a gala grand entrance party on the Texas Bow as we reached the Golden Triangle about 11PM.
3) David Tschiggfrie Dave was Watchman for many summers. I don't know if he had started refinishing all the deck railing in 1978 yet, but he did that job single-handedly (but played the calliope with both hands)

to the pilothouse crew
1) Capt. Ernest E. Wagner I cherish this one because it was taken on my birthday, Sept. 26, 1978 and it was the last trip Capt. Wagner worked on the DQ. What a wonderful pose on the bow in Dubuque....
2) Capt. Art ZoomZoom Zimmer
3) Capts. Carroll Rip Ware and Walter Karnath in the Forward Cabin Lounge at Winona, with Mrs. Karnath not believing a word she is hearing.

More pilots and an Engineer
1) Capts. Oren Russell and Harry Louden. On the wall of McAlpine Lock is MaryBill Bauer, and I do believe that is Travissimo with her, correct?
2) Capts. Lexie Palmore and Harry Louden Well, except for the pipe, Lexie's got it down pat.
3) Chief Earl Haskell one of my costars in the 1979 DQ promo film, Engine Room scene!

and even more...
1) Pete Feilhauer and Bill Kelly Jr. Engineers and chief jacks of all trades
2) Leroy Smith Watchman at Winona
3) Bob Reynolds Mate Bob was doing something to the stern searchlight, maybe replacing a carbon, Bob? What year were those removed?
Somewhere I have another picture of Bob in that location, but with a broom in hand. He was helping Dave T. 'tune' the calliope. I think something was stuck and it needed gentle 'adjusting' with the broomstick...
More later, but as Vic Tooker used to say, "And now a brief pause for the cause...."

Great pix, Judy. I know what I was doing to that light. First, those were not carbon lights, but utilized a big incandescent bulb like a projector bulb.
The bottom of that light barrel had rusted out and was more or less gone. I took all the old rusty metal out and took some light gauge sheet metal and bent it to shape and used pop rivets to secure it. Then took Red Hand and sealed up the seams, etc. and painted it, and if memory serves, Fred Carmichael helped me with that project!
Leroy Smith deserves a thread of his own. Lexie, do you still have your list of "Leroy-isms"? Of course, some cannot be posted here due to being rated "R".
Judy,
Tis moi there on the lock wall....gee, I miss that hair!
Travis
