The DELTA QUEEN did go up to Cape and turned out of there this afternoon. As fate would have it, I was downbound on the Ohio preparing to turn up the Upper, and had to wait on them at Cairo Point. When I realized I woulds have to wait, I noticed it was straight up 7:00 pm, time for dinner...I asked the pilot if Capt. Chengery was still aboard (he is) and asked him if he was not at dinner, could he please play "Abba Dabba Honeymoon" for me? Well, Capt. Gabe left the dinner table to come serenade his old crew member on the calliope, and two long whistle salutes were exchanged. Like Keith, I thought I'd be a big boy and smile sadly; unfortunately, I was reduced to tears. I first heard Capt. Gabe play that song in 1972, and that's likely the last time I'll ever hear him play it on the DQ's wonderful instrument. It is sad that the boat that brought me and others so much pleasure in so many different ways over the last 37 years won't survive just because the people who held the power to keep her going didn't care.

These 360 degree panorama pictures of the DQ should bring tears of joy and sorrow.

Bob: So glad you had such a unique opportunity to see the DQ at Cairo from your towboat pilothouse and to enjoy "Abba Dabba Honeymoon" played just for you by Capt. Gabe. And, yes indeed, we BIG boys do cry!!!!!
