I've finished building the Model Shipways kit of the handsome Str. CHAPERON which was a well proportioned, small boat famous for its service on the Green River. It was a fun kit to build...it's one of those projects which I'm glad is done but at the same time hate to see it end.5620.jpg5621.jpg

Nice work, Jim. How is the "DREAM" project coming along? Ran MISS FORTUNE yesterday up Laughery Creek about 6 or so miles. She is running well. First Mate doing pilot duty. Cap'n Walnut

Jim: Glad to hear that the DREAM's bottom is fixed; sorry about the generator not a genning. At least with MISS FORTUNE, I have been able to do most of the repairs/maintenance myself and it sure keeps me out of other kinds of mischief. Most recent was fixing throttle/reverse lever. I usta estimate spending two hours working to one hour playing but now think that is not enough~! Charge the battery and replace the water in the boiler at a minimum each time not to mention ordinary housekeeping or things that break. Cap'n Walnut

Did you replace any steel? What did you use for coating? I took the SUN*FISH for a short trip up the Tennessee River and back to my harbor at Mile 303. She ran far better that I ever dreamed. Owning yer own boat is full of dreams.

Yes....I replaced about 18 ft of the bottom plus ribs, overlayed a couple of small places, welded up several electrolysis pits and installed new magnesium annodes. Coated in regular coal tar epoxy which seems to work as well as any coating. No, I didn't add cyanne pepper to keep zebra mussels from adhering to the bottom as some people do. Do you have much of a zebra mussel problem down there in Alabamy? Up here in the good ol' Ohio they seem to come and go...one year they're real bad and the next they almost disappear. Happy to report that the boat went into the river Friday the hull is as dry as a bone.

Hey Jim,

Glad to hear the "DREAM" is back in the river. If there's still room could I reserve space for the cruise after the river ramblings program on Sun. I'm not 100% sure I'll be able to hang out in Lou-ville both days but I'm going to sure try.

Thanks!

That should do the DREAM for a while... hopefully. Thankfully, no zeebs down here, but a moss-growth that takes hold, but it's as good as several coats of two-part epoxy for making a hull watertight.
