Here are some pictures of pilots on my trips in 1977/78. Most of these people worked on the DQ into the '80s. First is Capt. Art 'Zoom Zoom' Zimmer on the wingbridge. Capt. Zimmer had a long career on Corps dredges before coming to the DQ. In those days, most of our pilots had retired from their towboat jobs. Next, seated in the Forward Cabin Lounge at Winona are Capts Carroll 'Rip' Ware and Walter Karnath. Mrs. Karnath is nearer the camera. Capt. Karnath's father was a pilot and his son Dick 'Butch' is/was? pilot on the Queens for many years. Third, you can see the student takes on the characteristics of the mentor. That's Capt. Lexie Palmore steering as Capt. Harry 'Cappy' Louden is relaxing with his pipe.288.jpg289.jpg290.jpg

More pilots and an engineer... First is Capt. Ware's proudest moment, piloting the DQ during President Carter's trip in August 1979. Second is at McAlpine. I believe that's Mary Bill Bauer up on the wall, and could that be Keith? The pilots are Oren 'Nero' Russell and Cappy Louden. The third pix is Chief Earl Haskell.291.jpg292.jpg293.jpg

Although I've been out on that lockwall (often with Mary Bill & Bill Bauer) more times than I can count, that ain't me!

After the 1979 cruise with President Carter aboard, Capt. Ware enclosed that photo in the Christmas card he and Miss Cleo sent, along with another showing the president at the steering levers with Capt. Rip "directing" him. A note with the photos said, "I'll bet I'm your ONLY friend who can tell the President of the United States what to do and where to go!"

Notice where the person is looking...towards the calliope. What ever happened to that thin kid with all the hair and glasses?
