I was just watching that wonderfully creepy Robert Mitchum movie from the mid-50's, "Night Of The Hunter". on TV--- first time I'd seen it in probably 20 years--and in the first 15 minutes a steamboat goes by. First you hear the unmistakable whistle-- then a boat's-eye view of the paddlewheel-- then you see the whole boat from the port side, slowly passing behind the actors! It lingers in view for that scene, is mentioned by the old man on the bank to the kid (not by name but by "passes every day at this time" or something like that). What an unexpected thrill it was to chance upon my work-home for 10 years, in a famous movie from '56! It must've had passengers enjoying the river then too (whichever river it was; does anyone know?)

This is one of our "don't miss" movies. . .unless it is being shown in the middle of the night as it was last night--12:30 a.m. EST. The Internet Movie Database lists Moundsville, West Virginia as one of the filming locations. That means the river was the Ohio, right?

Night of the Hunter is scheduled to be on Turner Classic Movies again on April 26, 6:00 p.m.

I was talking to Bob Schad in Kansas City yesterday and he mentioned watching the movie the night before on Turner Classics. He described the scene just as you did, Annie, and I said I'd mention it on steamboats.org to see if anyone else was aware of our Delta Queen being in this movie, as it is the first time either one of us has heard of it. Maybe it's been mentioned in a prior thread, as I recall there being some discussion about riverboats in cinema.

Jazzou, Keith posted a list 5 years ago (my printed out list says 1/30/2003) - geez, now I either have to shop for "Hunter" or wait until April. Thanks for the heads up Suzanne. The only movies on the list I ever found were "Beulah Land" (1980's) "Huckleberry Finn" (1960 version) and "Raintree County"
(1957). It took me forever to catch her on "Beulah Land" - it's a 4 hour+ movie but the DQ doesn't appear until 3:50. Keith also posted a list of movies that the GORDON C GREENE was in.
Plan to attend your show in June!

Great Pat - it will be good to see you again! Bob and I are sure looking forward to playing by the river (if not on it) in June. Should be lots of fun, and I'm hoping we can get a lot of the Ohio Valley folks in attendance.
