Captain Steve Nicoulin was informed today, Wednesday, that the April 18th race between the NATCHEZ and the DELTA QUEEN has been cancelled due to the high water. This situation will still be prevalent next week on the race date, so the decision was made to cancel the race. There will be no makeup date.

The Corps of Engineers announced this morning that they will be opening the Bonnet Carre Spillway tomorrow(Friday) and that it will probably be open at least 2 weeks. I know we have been getting constant rain up home all week, and its on the Ohio too, so this high water will be around a while in the Crescent City. Here's a newspaper story with good background info on the spillway openings: http://www.nola.com/news/index.ssf/2008/04/midwest_rain_forces_opening_of.html

A while and then some. Wait until the way above normal snow pack in the Rockies starts to melt. This will come down the Missouri and Arkansas. It all seems to lead to the conclusion that you better roll up your pant's legs.

Gosh, Judy that makes me sad! I am starting to wonder if there will be a Derby Race? I sure hope so, as this might be the last time I get to see the DQ!!! I have been very ill lately, and want to photog her one last time.

I hope that this doesn't mean that 1993 is coming all over again. Here at the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi, we've already had enough flooding from the tributary rivers this Spring, due to some serious rain we've been having. Now, if it continues to rain in the Midwest, and the snow melt begins, the big rivers will be rising too. If this happens, one will have to roll their pant legs up pretty far.
