Though it's not strictly river-related (and thus probably shouldn't appear on this board), a real live Nichol-built steam-powered calliope will be played in Milwaukee's Great Circus Parade on Sunday, July 12. Two regular steamboats.org posters, Dave Morecraft and myself, will be the ones issuing forth steamy renditions from this vintage instrument. The parade starts at 1:30 PM on the Lake Michigan waterfront and goes til about 4:00. I hope some of you can make it!

In a round about way, here is the river connection. I had a friend, Cliff Gray, who used to schlepp a big old band organ to that event year after year, all the way from Texas, and probably prior to that, Mississippi. He used to live in Picayune, MS, not far from New Orleans, and Doc, Roddy, and others liked to go visit him because of his vast collection of mechanical musical instruments. I went with them a few times. When Cliff retired, he and his wife decided to move back to Texas, and because of my influence, they settled in Jefferson, where I was living at the time. So there you have it.
