The annual race was postponed in May, due to the Ohio being well above flood stage during Derby Week. So, the Str. BELLE OF LOUISVILLE and the M/V BELLE OF CINCINNATI will compete for the golden antlers on Wednesday, June 29th. The competition now involves landings and the crews of both boats being required to perform various tasks, etc. Much different than it used to be -- especially with the absence of the Str. DELTA QUEEN!
Crew tasks
Too bad they can't earn credits for deckhands who play the calliope...
Keith,
according to the regulations and rules of the Great Steamboat Race there can be only one winner, the Belle of Louisville. Why, because her competitor didn´t show up for the original scheduled race :-)!

The BELLE OF CINCINNATI was in Louisville, above the Second Street Bridge, when I drove along Riverside Drive in Jeffersonville, en route to the museum this morning. The BOC is certainly a fine boat, but as I looked across the river I couldn't help but wish the DELTA QUEEN was here!
Museum visitors today included Dr. Doug Anderson, the director of the Marietta (OH) College Library. Mrs. Anderson is a member of the Friends of the Museums group and filled me in on the upcoming events involving the Ohio River Museum and Str. W.P. SNYDER, JR. Details can be found on the websites for the museums and The Marietta Times.

And are any of these events public knowledge yet? I'd be very interested to know any new happenings up that way!
Phillip <-- Sadly 800 miles away from the fun today 🙁
All: What happened at the boat race last Wednesday? I was busy with my own steamer and missed the big show. Anybody know the details? Cap'n Walnut
The Str. BELLE OF LOUISVILLE was the big winner of the day, and Alan Bernstein made sure that things were interesting. That's all I know.
Thanks, Frank. That's what I thought might be the result but still interested in the details. Even so, that's a lot more than I knew before! Cap'n Walnut.
Alan Bernstein, ever the showman, helped put on a great show for sure. The B of L ran pretty well throughout the race. We did between 17-17 1/2 RPMs through most of the race and she sounded just fine. It helped having around 400 pax, but we managed to put on a good show for 'em! She did around 10 mph going upriver and 12 mph coming back. We actually slowed down to normal cruising speed when the B of C was nowhere in sight. We couldn't have asked for better weather, either!
Thanks, Dan. What were the "special" things that the boats/crews had to do? And, wow, 17 or so RPMs and 10 mph up stream. I seem to remember that is ahead of what we measured a couple of years back when I took GPS readings from the roof! Cap'n Walnut
I didn't see all the events. What I did catch was the handyline and line toss down on the wharf between the Belles. I didn't get all of the results of those, but I heard one of our deckhands (whom I often see practicing his line throwing during cruises) put on a pretty good show for the line toss.
