The flood has not only changed the AQ's schedules, but it's fouling up a lot of Fourth of July activities around here. We have a big fireworks display between RI and Davenport usually shot off from a barge, but they are doing it from the Centennial Bridge tonight. So the bridge is partially closed all day and totally closed during the show. LeClaire Park is still under, so no viewing from there and also no Blues Fest there this weekend. It has been moved up to 2nd Street in downtown Davenport, not exactly as scenic as the park...Boaters who usually anchor in the river to watch the fireworks have been advised not to this year, and other land viewing areas are either underwater or inaccessible due to road closures. All these items pertain to Davenport - the RI festivities in Schwiebert Park (the old levee and armory site) will go on as scheduled thanks to our floodwall. The river crested Monday at 18.1, 3.1 over flood stage. I think this is the second highest of the four this season. Drought last year, perpetual flooding this year...
Judy,
You mentioned that the AQ's schedule has changed. Do you know where I can look online to view these changes? I went to the company website but there was no mention of any schedule changes.
Thanks in advance,
Chris
AQ schedule change
Here's one place: High Waters Force Mississippi River Cruise Ship to Alter Plans - American Queen Steamboat Company
Two Queens in St. Louis
Both the American Queen and Queen of the Mississippi are docked near each other on the St. Louis Riverfront today. It's a rare occasion to have both boats in port at the same time. The AQ arrived early morning on July 4, with the QOM arriving in the afternoon. As we know, the AQs upper Mississippi itinerary was substituted. I don't know if the QOMs was changed. The AQ leaves tonight, with the QOM on tomorrow.
AQ in the news
Look at this: American Queen tours bring steamboat back to St. Louis : News. The news services actually are paying attention. Of course, they missed the fact that the QOM is in St. Louis in July, but at least the AQ information is good. And, it is not one of those "oh, by the way" short articles, either.
QOM, high water, etc.
I should probably start a new thread for this, but does anyone know if they ever got the hydraulics hooked-up to the QOM's paddlewheel, or is it still just non-functional "dead-weight" ?
I presume since they went to the expense of putting a wheel on it, they plan to make it work, as they had advertised it as a sternwheeler. Also it would be good to get the bugs worked-out before completing the second vessel (I presume it is identical, and also has a wheel?).
We're getting mucho rain here in the mid-Ohio valley. I'm not sure if that will play into the AQ's Ohio River itinerary, but we're supposed to crest at about 32' by Monday, which is 20' above normal summertime pool level. There is talk of cancelling this Saturday's National hydroplane regatta/race at Madison due to highwater (but they may go ahead with it anyway).
Due to the high water and the re-scheduling of the AQ itinerary, we will now have FOUR tours visit the Howard Steamboat Museum in the next two weeks. We look forward to these visits and are delighted to have the opportunity to share our unique museum with "boat people"!
Many thanks to Travis for his behind-the-scenes efforts on behalf of the HSM!
