I just recently read the article from American Cruise Line about the construction of the new boat. I makes me sad to the soul to hear them proclaim how excited they are to usher in a new generation of riverboats that offer the best ammenities and comfort. They are even bragging about the speed of this boat. A new generation of boats is likley to bring a new generation of passenger thats willing to pay for the ride and not the experience. Even though steamboats raced, the very idea of a fast boat is enough th turn my stomach. The DQ Steamboat company prided themselves of slowing down and taking in all that America has to offer. Its obvious they want to get you there and off to board the next round of paying customers. Now comes the experience part of my rant. I notice that they never metion the word steam when it comes to this new boat. The smell of the smoke and steam, the pitman arms turning, the visit to the engineroom the see the wonders of mechanical engineering is what seperates river people from the average person wanting to sightsee. I'm a huge drag racing fan because i can stand the noise and smell of nitromethane. The same applies here. I realize its a money thing but the AQ is sitting there waiting and they can't blame the economy when in thier own words they metion that 2010 has seen record bookings and increasing demands for river cruising. I'm outta breathe.
