What is the date the photo of the Crescent tug TERENCE J. SMITH was taken? I have a photo of this tug taken Jan. 19. 2010 at the Southern Recycling yard on the Industrial Canal at New Orleans. All that is left of the boat is the hull only, the deckhouse has been completely removed. Also, could you send a high resolution jpeg of this image so that I might include a photo in my collection of more than 50,500 photos of towboats and tugs?

Capt, love your pictures...even when this forum had a hiccup and thought your pictures weren't "steamboaty" enough, am I showing my age?

Keep 'em coming, matter of fact your pictures were part of a phone call discussion with another true steamboater this morning...we spent a bit of time talking about the high Mississippi river.... Think these pictures fit into this discussion now?

Thanks again, Deb and me, the next time we're in NOLA, a phone call, OK?
And the second Natchez picture, the one of the Pile of Debris, misty eyes, my friend.

New news?

I am just curious as to whether there is any new news on th Mississippi Queen? After the Becky Thatcher sank, I fear the MQ might be one of the next to go. Me an my wife are plannibg a trip the New orleans this September and I am hoping to see her in person (under reconstruction). I always have hopes of getting to see this boat returned to her former glory.
Thanks,

Mississippi Queen News - No News Is Good News ??

Ed ,
I wish I was the bearer of good news but to the best of my knowledge there is really no news either good or bad to report . The last bit of news that reached me was that there was a lean aganist the Str. Mississippi Queen by the good folks at Boland Shipyard for not receiveing payment for dockage and services rendered . I go by the Str.. Mississippi Queen on almost a daily basis and I have seen no visible improvement in the overall condition of the boat . Unfortunately , if anything from what I can see from the outside the overall condition has only gotton worst !
Also , Ed , when your in the New Orleans area and if you have the time to do this you and your wife are more than welcome to come with me for a ride on a ship ! I have made this offer to others and at different times but unfortunately only a few have taken me up on this . " Steamboat " Mary and her friend Capt. Fred Carmichael has made a few trips with me and from what they tell me they both enjoyed it quite a bit .
Regardless , hope you have a great time in the Crescent City and if I hear any news at all conccerning the fate of the Str. Mississippi Queen I will be more than happy to shar it with you and all .
Smooth Sailing !

Cap (and get used to it, it's a long acquired habit. By using it, I show respect for you and everyone else who's earned it) :O)

Seeing the MQ like that is like revisitiing the old neighborhood only to see your old house in disrepair. Is it my imagination, or is she really heavy in the stern? A lot lower in the water back there. Hope the crew dining room is not full of water.

Cap,

Those mermaids look a little lonely with out their 44-whistle 18K gold plated consorts!

That boat sure has alot of memories and it sickens me to see her there like this!
Surely some day someone will either put her out of her misery or spend bucketloads of money on getting her back from this moldy grave she reposes in!

Hold the phone!!!!

In picture number one I noticed the big brass steam whistle is now gone, too Look at the mast behind the pilothouse...the whistle WAS in front of that!)! That is a historic whistle from the Str. MISSOURI...a 12" Lunkenheimer! Wow, every successive picture shows something else gone. I sure hope they are capping all these steam lines they are leaving with out their fittings! If not, someone someday is gonna have alot of plumbing to renew!

Travis, don't you remember posting about an auction at the end of November which was going to include the calliope? Don't you imagine the whistle would have been part of that auction too? Whatever happened to the auction?

Judy,

I did make said post when my informant (a former crew member closely associated with the goings on down there) had made me aware of it last last October. So far, I have heard nothing. The calliope, whistle, and most all interior appurtanances have been removed...but to where?

I guess in this case, my informant was not as aware of the situation as they lead me to believe...or perhaps plans changed and it was cancelled for what ever reason. I have heard nothing more if it since.

If Boland Ship Yard has a lien on the boat, maybe that precludes any idea of an auction pertaining to the MQ.

Always love your photos, Ted. Great views (and angles) the rest of us never see.
That little Wagenborg ship is a familiar sight. The line calls here on the Delaware (and the Chesapeake) frequently. Usually neat and clean.

Roger , ..............................

Greetings From New Orleans !
Roger , pleased to hear that you enjoy the pictures ! I'll be the first to admit that not all are truly " Steamboat " related but the vast majority are river related and lets face it folks , there are just not that many steaamboats to get pictures of now presently and if you enjoy the river as much as I do , a few good river related pictures some how quenches my thirst for the life on the river , no matter what your back ground or point of view is ! Here are a few shots of the remains of the Union Gunboat , Cairo , in Vicksburg , then one of New Orleans and then one of Baton Rouge . Hope you enjoy !
Smooth Sailing !
