Delta Queen – Ohio River Update
As of today, the US Coast Guard has closed The Ohio River at mile point 848, just north of Paducah, Kentucky, until further notice. The ACE will be dredging this part of the river due to conditions caused by low water levels. This closure makes it impossible for the Delta Queen to sail up The Ohio River to Cincinnati on her current itinerary. The vessel will now sail to Chattanooga where the July 1, 2008, cruise will begin. The July 1, 2008, cruise will disembark in Memphis as scheduled.

Wouldn't this low water affect the American Queen's new schedule, since it was rerouted from the flooding Mississippi last week? It's supposedly headed to Cincinnati for a July 5 arrival. Maybe MAL forgot. You know, with so many Midwest riverboats to look after (2), it gets so difficult to keep them all straight.
Darin,
That´s what I thought too. The AQ is scheduled to arrive in Paducah by tomorrow. As of today the dredging is still going on. There´s nothig online (or at least I couldn´t find anything) about how long that dredging is going on. Here in the Ohio river report it´s just stated that the river is closed since June 27th 7:15 am.

O.k, the AQ has passed lock 53 at 9:40 CDT today. The latest report is still stating that the Ohio river is closed at mile 849. The Paducah Skytracker currently is not facing the riverfront. So maybe the are changing the webcam when the AQ is in.
Carmen
AQ passed lock 52 at 12:25 pm CDT on her way to Paducah.

I don't know anything about the river being closed, it may be, but I noticed on the lock report page they are now locking boats through at John T Myers lock, and Smithland lock. I am guessing that would mean towboats are passing through the area where the river was closed. Just a guess though, I could be completely wrong.

Nick,
It´s still stated on the website I´ve linked to in a previous posting.
Can you help me out with the lock report page for the Ohio river please? I usually used this
Navigation Information Connection
website and it doesn´t list the Ohio river anymore. I can only access the data of a certain vessel on the Ohio river using the "Locate a vessel". But I don´t get a whole list of all vessels queued on the Ohio river.
Carmen
The DQ must have skipped Decatur yeaterday as she locked thru Nickajack at 0737 this morning. Today was to be a steamboatn' day. There were bad storms in the Decatur area yeaterday. A child was killed in Huntsville, just across the river. They may have had a warning and just kept going. We may be able to get an update when the Krauses, Pat T. and Jo Ann arrive tomorrow.
BTW: I think that Nick is correct about the river opening to traffic. They have a big "arrived" above and below J T Myers Lock but they are locking tows through now. See locate Ohio- Vessel Current Location in Pool
Hello Carmen,
I go to this site, Vessel Locations/Queued Vessels
It is almost always up and working right, but it seems though that when I really need it, its shut down. 🙂
Like the page John showed it has the Ohio River pools on it, and it shows traffic locking up, and down at John T Myers which is right above where the river is shut down (i beleive) becuase of this I am guess they are now letting commercial traffic pass through that area. There is a long wait of boats waiting to lock through at John T, but the American Queen will be allowed to lock ahead of all of these boats when she gets there.
I figure they changed the Delta Queen's schedule becuase she was due through the area a couple of days ago, when the river was still closed, but it my be open now. By the time the AQ gets there, hopefully she can get through. 🙂 I am happy about the change becuase that puts her in Point Pleasant in a couple of days. I am looking forward to that.

John, Nick (and Judy by mail),
Thanks!
I´ve always started with this website
Navigation Information Connection
then clicking on Vessel Information / Vessel Locations/Vessels Queued and then it doesn´t show the Ohio river.
I see I have to click on OMNI Reports and there on Vessel Locations/Queue/Lckgs to get the Ohio river again.
They´ve changed so much on this NIC website that it´s more confusing than ever.

And this website is still saying it´s closed

Yeah, its dated June 27th.
Mile 849 is right below John T Myers lock, in the Smithland Pool. It shows here, Vessel Current Location in Pool many boats that locked down into the Smithland pool today June 30th. Locking down into the Smithland pool means they locked through John T Myers downbound (you probably already understand that). Anyway, the river is clearly open now, becuase you see the last date they had downbound lockages? June 26th, right before the river was closed.
My guess is it is open now, and that site you posted hasn't been updated. I might be wrong though, but I don't see how those boats would have locked down if they had the river closed. My last trip out on the boat with AEP, I got off at John T due to the closed section of river. My guess is the lock wouldn't let anyone lock down if the river was still closed.
The AQ is on her way upriver (currently J T Myers pool). The other website now doesn´t show the closure anymore.
