One of my spring projects this year was to get the calliope aboard our Steamboat Minne Ha Ha looking nice. Well, I thought my efforts had ended at painting the manifold back in May since our season started Memorial Day weekend, but I was told on Monday that they would cut steam and let me polish the whistles if I had the time. Today was my day off, and I accepted this offer. I started at 6:30 AM this morning and finished 9 hours later, but it was well worth it. Enjoy the pictures!3739.jpg3740.jpg3741.jpg

His day off

I'm impressed that he took his day off to do it, and considers it a privilege too. There is hope in our younger generation to keep the steam up!!!!

We're doing our best Judy to keep it alive! There are a few of us youngin's who consider it a privilege to work on these steamboats, even if for free!

Surprisingly, it sounds decent. The keyboard is still slow to respond, and i figure that only a skilled electrician can fix that problem. I was told that all the sanding of rust we did (using a very fine sandpaper for use on metal) would change the tone of the whistles, so I went up this morning to see if we had a lot of tuning to do. I went up the keyboard and, after clearing the condensation and hearing that things sounded good, said "why not, I'm already up here" and played the morning concert. 'Oh, What a Beautiful Morning' (one of the first nice mornings we've had in a while, so I figured it was only appropriate) and 'Mairsey Dotes' finishing with Doc's "over the fence and out". Great way to start the day 🙂 And don't worry, I'll try to get some videos of it up, but please don't expect too much.
