Hi all,
Not sure where to put this posting, hope this is an OK spot.
Back in '69, while a sophmore in High School (what, about 15 yrs old?), I did a painting of the DQ in art class. This was during the "Save the DQ" campaign and (as I've posted before) I was doing my best in a tiny railroad town in N. Calif. to generate interest. Well, I was digging through storage looking for something else, when I came upon my old painting. So now it's hanging in our hallway of steamboat pictures/paintings. I realize nowthat it's not a very accurate painting, but I did it without pictures at hand (just memories of pictures) and without having seen the boat (don't think I'd seen the DK yet either--although I did later, while she was sunk in Rio Vista). So thought I'd share this little bit of my steamboatin' history.

PS-- I got an A out of the class because of this painting--teacher told me that if I'd frame it, he'd give me an A--so I went home and made the frame and the little brass plaque (out of some shim stock that was laying about). He didn't think I'd do all that!
Not too bad, Dave! I've seen a lot worse for sale on eBay!
David, my good friend, I'm not trying to add to your workload as I know you are just as overloaded as I am (how can somebody semi-retired be overloaded? ...hmmm) but I think a wonderful thing would be for you to create for the Dewey estate on Dewey Mountain, another painting of the DQ now that you are in the know, so to speak, and hang them side by side. And this time, add to your newest painting your Dad flying the Eagle from the Sun Deck, aft...
You know, bud, you are my hero. In 1969, my biggest interest wasn't a steamboat, my biggest concern, actually my only concern at that time had something to do with my hormones...Gawd, if I only knew then what I know now...Fast forward 39 years, and who was right, what is more important?
Very nice painting, I'm impressed that you knew what a scape pipe was as a mere lad...and I will add, as a reinforcement to Bob's post, at least your painting doesn't have two stacks in it!
Bruno,
Scary, I was thinking a similar thought, do a new painting! Hmm, dad flying a kite--hmm.
I am remembering Mr. Brannon telling me my colors were "muddy" and I replied, "But I'm trying to paint the Mississippi!!" I'd never seen her, just knew she was supposed to be "muddy."

PS speaking of overwork--saw my Dr. today, he wouldn't give me a stress release because the same problems would still be there when I got back! So, more zantac, plus I'm supposed to wear some splints at night to control what is apparently carpal tunnel syndrome! Aaaugh!!
