In the last couple of weeks I was working on a lot of background issues at steamboats.org, mainly for two purposes:
1) eventually having a search function where you can really find any kind of content that was ever published on steamboats.org
--> We now have a new search function running that is based on an enterprise level, IBM-technology based search engine (www.steamboats.org/steamboats-search/steamboats-search.html). Give it a try and please let me know when it's not behaving like you expect to do. I'm still testing and optimizing.
The only down side is, the server is running on its own server right her in my office at home, which makes searches sometimes a bit slow and also the search function will probably fail from time to time, e.g. when I have to restart the server or do some maintenance work.
2) prevent all these nasty people out there, called "spammers", from signing up on the message board and flood it with unrelated advertizing and other nasty stuff. There had been massive spam attacks within the last weeks and months which I could stop manually, but spamming attacks on the Internet in general are still increasing dramatically.
--> So now there are quite a few new technologies running in the background to prevent spammers from even registering for an account. If you every have dealt with stopping spam you know how difficult it is to separate real users from spammers. I hope we found a good solution for that now and will be more or less safe from spamming. If you get into trouble on the message board and the board does prevent you from doing something you want to do, please let me know so I can improve the procedures where possible.
