For some unknown reason I got this email from ACL today, updating their copyright request for 'riverlorian'.
RIVERLORIAN - Reviews & Brand Information - AMERICAN CRUISE LINES, INC. Guilford, CT - Serial Number: 85448794
I wonder what else they'll trademark, 'steamboat' maybe????
Who had the original trademark of 'riverlorian'? Was it Karen Dodd who created the term, or one of the DQ Company incarnations?
*RE: 'Riverlorian'*
Hi, Judy,
Good question and I don't know the answer. Seems...I think...maybe...perhaps...first time I heard the term 'Riverlorian' applied was with Toots Molloy in her time. Again, not certain as I wasn't on/around the boats for extended periods of time. My understanding as of several weeks ago ACL already had a riverlorian(s) lined up and ready for their new boat. In the old days with the GREENE LINE it usually fell to purser Bob McCann or one of the pilots/captains to make pertinent announcements of news, history etc. along the way--and that was it. The GORDON C. GREENE had a PA system installed on decks and main cabin but not sure when that happened--probably later than early on. Anybody know?
Trademarks, brand names, logos can be tricky and pesky when it comes to transferring or renewing the copyright. Recent discussions RE: free/public use of GOLDENROD showboat photos ties to copyright. Heard a fine paper read last night on history, benefits, headaches, legal/personal issues today of internet, mass social media etc. More on this in time. Cheers!

a.k.a.
Toots Malloy was Karen Dodd when she started on the DQ in 1976 and became Toots around the time she developed the riverlorian's position (which I had suggested without that name in a letter to the company in 1975, trying to get a summer job for myself!) Karen/Toots really made that position take off. It was needed because we were dependent on the pilots to give us information on what we were passing. Some, like Rip Ware, loved to do that. Others, like Bill Foley, didn't like dealing with the microphone at all. This is referring to the 1973-83 DQ era, by the way.
*RE: 'Riverlorian' evolution*
Hi, Judy,
Thanks for bringing me up to date with the above. I was certainly in 'limbo' doing other things during that time usually in Europe, on a ship etc. Shows what I don't know. ACL apparently pursing the same position now for their new boat and for others of their fleet operating on the East coast and to other destinations focusing on history, lore, nature studies etc. A good term and I've always liked it. Cheers!

I may have mentioned this before, but quite a few years ago they wanted me to use the R within a circle in the DELTA QUEEN's listing in the Inland River Record to indicate it was a registered trade mark. I said I don't do that. They said yes you will, it is a registered name and nobody else could use it. I sent them a photo of a lugger tug in Louisiana with the name DELTA QUEEN easily seen on the pilothouse. No further reply from DQ office.
Clara once indicated to me that every blue moon or so, after a particularly spirited evening at Under The Hill, she would lean up against the nearest stable surface and proudly declare her position as the AQ's "Lorer-rivian"
Riverwhatever
Soooo, the question is, who is filling all these positions?? Has anyone been hired or heard from anyone who has? Seems awefully quiet in that department. I checked to see what positions they had available, and they mentioned only a few, riverlorian not being one of them. So there must be something going on. I thought they were going to hire some of the old hands, some of whom post on this board. Not a peep. Is "mum" the word?
Its My Understanding That ..................
Greetings From New Orleans ,
Lexie , its my understanding that the " Powers That Be " are now taking applications for the position of " River Lorian " and that three will be hired and the Str. American Queen still has plans to come back into operation in April of next year !
The Str. American Queen is still at the Bollinger Shipyard on the Calcasieu River undergoing refurbishing and maintenance !
HAPPY THANKSGIVING !
Smooth Sailing !

Explanation of thread title No 'Riverlorian' on AQ apparently
It appears that an explanation is needed of my title of this thread. The original posting pointed out that ACL has filed for a copyright on the term 'riverlorian'. If they do indeed hold the copyright to that term, then presumably that position on the AQ couldn't be called 'riverlorian', hence the comment: No 'Riverlorian' on AQ apparently. This refers to the term 'riverlorian', not to the position, which is indeed going to be on the AQ, which position has been filled for a time. Because those hired requested we not broadcast it, we haven't. Now Lexie, as to why they requested this 'secrecy' I don't know, but we have honored their request.
Au Contraire! Riverlorian Revival

Cutting to the point
So, in short, the ACL copyright filing doesn't keep the AQ from using the term Riverlorian?
As I said in the posting just before yours, Mr. Rubacky, I was referring to the usage of the TERM riverlorian, not the physical person or position. I thought that was clear in my original posting, but since it appeared to not be, I reiterated it in today's posting. Hopefully you just didn't see the second posting, because I don't know how much plainer I can make it: the term, the TERM, the TERM, not the position!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
