Today was spent with the most wonder crew of Ohio River travelers. Captain Carolyn Lambert and her crew of one, Malkah Spivak-Birndorf, are on "an expedition into the cultural and ecological life of the Ohio". It best to visit Carolyn's website for the whole story:

Keep your eyes peeled for this marvelous band of wayfarers, and please extend them a great big Ohio River Welcome when they are in your area. Malak will leave the catamaran vessel in Louisville, later this week, and another equally-special person will join Carolyn's crew.

I heard the other day that someone pulled a six-foot octopus from the Ohio at Louisville. Perhaps the Lifeboat Project can shed some light on the ecological happenings that produced such a quirk.....

Actually it was only a five-foot octopus. Ask Cap'n Carolyn if you are fortunate enough to meet her and her courageous crew along their perilous route. Their findings may astound you.

The octopus was a real one only it dead long before it hit the river. A film crew that was making some kind of movie, bought the octopus frozen, thawed it out, used it as a prop then disposed of it by throwing it in the river at the falls. A couple of days later a fisherman snagged the poor creature with his fishing rig. Much to his surprise there was an octopus on the end of his line, dead but real none the less.

Cap'n Carolyn Lambert called from Grand Chain, IL on the rebound, down on the Lower Ohio River, after safely reaching Cairo. And the way she tosses around the names o' people and places on the river, she's become a genuine, authentic "riverman". The Cap'n had two crew changes, and now working on the third, since she rounded the bend at East Bend, below Rabbit Hash, and down into the mystery below. After her 981 mile jaunt down the Ohio, she, and a steady turn-over of crew members will be climbing the grade back up the river to Pittsburgh. When asked what her next move will be after the extended trip is over, she quickly replied, "Take a very long, hot bath."

Headin' Home

Captain Carolyn Lambert and Marisa, her crew of one, called last night, and said she was heading back home to Pittsburgh after going the full length of the Ohio River and half-way back. Around 8:41 pm, last night, the spunky, seasoned river gal landed across the river from the Rabbit Hash General Store and I eventually met the ladies as they caught up on the good eats at the local Mexican restaurant. The short time we spent together went by all too fast, and it was sad to see them go. But as they left I reminded Carolyn that the river community is like one big family, to which Cap'n Carolyn quickly replied, "... and we belong." No truer words were ever uttered.

Carolyn passed up past our house today, Sept.24, at 1400 hrs. She was tight against the kentucky shore, holding under the point. Not making very good time. It's a long, long way to Pittsburgh with this river up.

Cap'n Carolyn has become a mighty fine boatm'n, and with her grit she'll whip this old river, long as it may be, back to P'burgh. God Speed to her and her good crew on their journey home. Hopefully, the river will see more of her.

Back Home Again...

A call to Cap'n Carolyn, yesterday, found her back home in P'burgh, safe, well, and still thrilled with her nearly 2,000 mile roundtrip adventure on the Ohio River. Rarely does the river find such a person as she, and hopefully Carolyn will be back on the river again for more adventures.
