Two summers ago. I met a woman who was paddling a canoe the length of the Ohio River. Along the way she made so many friends that she decided to make a committment to the river and the passenger boat industry. Recently, she sent a letter thanking me for my part in helping her become involved with the river industry, and she announced that she was presently working on obtaining a Master's license for small tonnage-- a respectable start. So I reckon there are options that do not include steamboats.
