P.A. DENNY on the move

It was a treat to see the P.A. DENNY southbound at our landing this afternoon. Capt. Frank Straub was at the wheel. He said they are heading to Louisville for some chartered trips. I wanted to get a photo and post it here, but by the time we heard the Denny's horn they were almost past us.

For those who have our 2007 Calendar, the P.A. DENNY is the boat featured next month, when it was the SCOTT. We're in the middle of designing a 2008 Calendar, and the topic will be period steam excursion boats. It may be an all-new calendar design as well.

All Aboard the DENNY

Right you are, Cap'n Steve, what a treat it truly was to see the PAD back on the river runnning better than ever. Capt. Tom Price will be thrilled to hear this good news.

The DENNY spent the night tied up below us, and after work, Cap'n Dave and I spent a couple of hours with the two Captains-Frank-- Frank Staub and Frank Trainor. Later, back in my bed after midnight, I was so stoked after visiting with those fellows, I had a hard time falling off to sleep. Lots of pleasant memories from the start-up years of the PAD on the Kanawha River at Charleston over thirty-some years ago came rushing back.

Who on this board realizes that for a couple of years the DENNY outfit was being touted as THE up-and-coming new passenger boat company on the river; some saying that it might possibly eclipse the DQSCo? We certainly had the talent:
Lawson and Momma Jean Hamilton
Ross and Sandy Tuckwiller
Tony Harrison
Todd Mace
Nelson Jones
Tom Cook
Bradley and Tom Price
Jeff Sanders
And others whose names I cannot recall.

Reserve us a couple, maybe more, of your famous calendars.

Steve,

Wish I was at home, for the DENNY was the first boat I ever drew a paycheck on, at the Louisville landing in 1978. Nothing would be more fun than to be aboard her in the harbour some 30 years later!

The DENNY is a wonderful old boat with a great history and some of the greatest river people I have had the pleasure to know as both a crew and operators. Every time I have been aboard her there is a spirit unlike any other excursion boat I have known. It's great to see her back on the river!

When the DELTA QUEEN landed at Cincinnati for the homecoming this year, I saw the DENNY at the landing over on the Newport, KY side of the river...it brought back memories of 30 years earlier when I first laid eyes on her on a foggy morning on the Ohio at Louisville...when I spied that steam calliope (powered by air, of course) I ran aboard and begged my way to the keyboard. My, my, my what a career that started for me!

Maybe she'll still be there when I get home on the 29th!

"Come board the PA Denny, she's graceful and she's tall." - copyright, Jazzou Jones and Bob Schad.

A great song about a great boat, written by two river legends in their own right. I always enjoyed singing it.
