I've seen several pictures of hand powered sternwheelers while browsing around, and am wondering if anybody has pictures or videos of any more from the past or from today that work or if someone is building one if they can share some building info. Thanks!

I have the plans for a 40 ft sternwheel "skiff" called the Alligator. They were published in 1911 in "Rudder" magazine. Not powered by hand, but by a 3 cylinder gas engine. The hull is nothing more than a very large flat bottom skiff. The plans are for the full size boat, but several models have been built from them. With todays modern engines, I'll bet she would make someone a wonderful little houseboat8447.jpg

23 ft Sternwheeler skiff.

I am building a 23 ft (not including the wheel) steam powered sternwheeler with a modified Carolina Skiff hull. We angled the bottom up a few inches toward the stern to give it better water flow to the wheel. The boiler has been built and the engines and wheel are from the previous boat I had. They are pretty short stroke engines and the wheel is about three feet in diameter so we'll see how it performs when done. The boiler will burn wood or coal.

The first photo is the hull in the water for the first time. The second is the old boat I had that had to be replaced after dry rot took it's cabin and the last one is a schematic of how it will look when finished.

Jim: Looks good! But how about raising the pilot house so the pilot's head and shoulders are above the roof line to give a view astern and not diminish the view ahead at all. You might need a heat shield from the boiler and flu gases down there in Florida.
