A source known to the RH Shipyard, was told by Army Engineers that the problems at the lock and dam should NOT affect the level of the Markland Pool. See:

Those of us who are on this board can see from reading the linked story that there has been a miter gate malfunction. Anyone know whether it was the big or small lock? Was the gate struck by a tow?

The big chamber has been down for repairs, so I'd guess it was the small chamber. The Bengal's football game dominated the news, today, but we should hear more by morning.

Here is the news I got yesterday around 5 PM:

"Ohio River Closed at Markland - 1,200' Chamber is Down
Gary Birge reports the lower miter gate leaves on the 1,200’ chamber Markland L/D have experienced a catastrophic failure. One leaf is laying in the river, the other leaf has a broken strut arm and is pointing downstream. The theory is a filling valve was open when the miter gate was closed.
The fleet is in the 600’ chamber so the Ohio River is closed at Markland at this time. We are working to get the fleet out of the 600’ chamber to reopen the river. We are getting the proper folks on site to assess the situation and determine the way ahead."

This morning someone said the Louisville yacht "CQ Princess" was in the lock at the time of the accident. I was working down at my landing and happened to take note of the CQ Princess downbound in the afternoon.

Another News Link

Traffic is still passing the RH Shipyard, and we have clarified that the trouble, as Steve said, is with the miter gate on the big chamber.

CNN's version

I just saw a story on CNN - they were saying that a lock gate fell into the water and were showing a normal functioning DAM gate!

Any updates?

Any updates on the Markland lock gate situation? I presume the Corps has heavy duty cranes located along the river to be used in such a situation. The RI District's crane is named Hercules and is usually fleeted in the Corps yard in LeClaire, by L&D 14.

Has anyone seen this news clip?

A friend called to tell me he saw a clip of the m/v Pamela Dewey(us) talking to the m/v Steven J. Mason as we were getting in the waiting line below Markland on Monday. The clip had a video of us actually talking on the radio to each other. My friend can't remember where he saw it, but he thought it would be either from the Cincinnati or Louisville newspaper site. Has anyone seen and heard that video?
