On account of a birthday celebration, the Rabbit Hash Shipyard will be closed on 10/12/10. Anyone needin' anything is just out of luck, it bein' Columbus Day today, and durn near everythin's closed today, too. Shipyard Sam is nowhere to be found. Might have took off early for the TN River to celebrate. If you need anythin', you might try lookin' for Cap'n Walnut, but heard tell he run off, too. Anyhow, this here is the notice: Happy Birthday tomorrow, Shipyard!

I'll add my BD greetings to the fine Captain of the Sun*Fish!

To quote our friend Capt. John, "May all your winds be tailwinds, and may all your trips be down".

Mary: Cap'n Walnut's "run-off is somewhat exaggerated. But, since the yard, boat dock, marina and all done been closed terday in your honor, I done slep-in this morning. Trust you are having a fine time with your BD and historical celebration. When you need a "steam fix" let me know, I'm looking for a riverlorian with a cord or two of wood 2" x 2" x 14" long...so, happy BD all year! Cap'n Walnut

Well, you just can't trust that sternline telegraph 100%--was the mayor who said you ran off!! Now, about that "steam fix" . . .

Well: the Mayor is a dog...a real bitch actually! A female border collie, methinks and a real cutie, she has been Mayor since my friend Junior (the black lab) died a couple of years ago. As far as the steam fix goes, what are you doing sometime on Wednesday afternoon? I am planning on a shake down cruise to test some piping changes. Mebbe both you and Frank Prudent could come. It'll be a go if I don't hafta bring my friend home from the hospital that afternoon. Lemme know you guys...not a proper cruise, but likely run down from Wilder to the Ohio River (three miles) and splash about in the Cincinnati area for an hour or so! Gets dark early! Cap'n Walnut.

Cap, love to come, but getting ready to head up to upstate NY to a wedding! A couple of Delta Queen engineers are getting married over the weekend, and Fred and I head up that way, after I pick him up from the airport Wednesday. What an invitation! I hate to turn it down. 'Course, I could just ditch Fred . . .

Cap'n., let me know when on Wednesday. I'll be there! I'm off of work tomorrow afternoon for good behavior. But if your friend gets out of the hospital and things get postponed, well, that's OK. Hospitals or rotten places to be sick in.

Frank: Donno yet when things might happen. Hospital deal still up in the air but mebbe solved this afternoon. I PLAN to leave from Fredrick's Landing in Wilder about 2:30 pm...quite close to you. It could be a drippy day! I don't mind a little rain but high wind causes me to worry although great wind swells in the Licking are not too common (if we stay there). Sigh, time off for "good behavior"...will blunders never cease? You can e-mail me on [email protected].

Since the shipyard was closed Cap'n Walnut, his brother John, and myself took the Str. MISS BLUE on a Cincinnati Harbor trip today. One unexpected adventure had us head into the mouth of the Mill Creek. I'm not sure, but we probably were the first steamboat up there in ages.

The cookies that I brought to the crew were reported as being very good, but the jury is still out as to if they are better than Judy's.

Frank: We got out as a front came right up the Licking River to Fredrick's Landing...got out just before as it broke. MISS BLUE (or is it BLEW?) is snug up in her barn as this is written. We steamed 14.88 miles in about three hours. We may hafta put Mill Creek on her splash board! You done said that you'd tell Kenny that you saw water in my gauge glass once er twict...at least now and then...now that we done got the 'lectric doctor pump! Them cookies you brought WUZ right good but not quite as good as Miss Judy's. Cap'n Walnut

Chips Ahoy

The only proper substitute for Miss Judy's steamboat cookies is "Chips Ahoy." Keeping in mind it is still a poor substitute but very nearly the best you can do in cookie shortage emergencies.
