The Rambling River Rats, which is not an organized group but merely a bunch of displaced steamboat passengers, will be riding a steamboat again next July 18-22! JoAnn Schoen has energized her Withers Family to cruise aboard the AMERICAN QUEEN from Pittsburgh to Cincinnati and is inviting the RRR to enlarge the group. There is a full day of cruising followed by shore stops in Point Pleasant and Maysville. While the Mothman legend is mentioned by the AQ brochure, of more interest in Point Pleasant to river people would be the wonderful river museum established several years ago by Capt. Charles Henry Stone and other local rivermen. Virginia Bennett has donated items also. Maysville is the hometown of Rosemary Clooney and her brother Nick. This trip has a Music of the 60s theme in addition to the usual steamboat musical fare. If you'd be interested in joining the RRR on the Upper Ohio, please contact JoAnn through the .org message system, or me at [email protected]. for more information.

AQ trip Pittsburgh/Cincinnati

I should have mentioned: the starting price for this is $1195, and the hotel is the Omni William Penn in downtown Pittsburgh.

"Quaint bunk beds"

There's only one brief sentence in the brochure noting that the Economy Inside Staterooms have quaint upper and lower berths. The cheapest category with twin beds is G, which is $1445 for 4 nights. Back in my younger DQ days, bunk beds were 'quaint'. Today in my Medicare days, they ain't!!!!

Judy,

It is a fact of crew member life on the river that the most endearing sites in any river town are the restaurants. I can report that my favorite part of Point Pleasant is that charming, stuck in the 1950s coffee shop on the main street (turn right coming off the boat and cross the street).

Yummy old fashioned hamburgers for lunch or substantial breakfasts for earlier in the day.

Pete's

Did you ever have some hamburger with your onions at Pete's in Prairie du Chien? It was just a portable stand open only on Wednesdays and Sundays, but luckily we were usually in Prairie on a Sunday... he had a Pete's East in LaCrosse for a while too before the condos wiped out the park. One time I brought one back for Jim Blum, and by the time I got to the boat the grease had eaten through the waxed paper bag! Oh for one right now, its lunch time here!
