For those many who have asked me, and who wish to look forward to next summer, the presenter for my 2010 River Ramblings program at the Howard Steamboat Museum & Mansion will be Capt. Carl Henry, riverman extraordinaire from La Crosse, Wisconsin on the beautiful Upper Mississippi River. Carl has worked on the river since he was 19 years old and also holds degrees in English and Fine Arts, having also been employed in the public relations and publishing fields.

Entitled From Paddlewheels to Propellers - A View from the Pilothouse, Carl's program will present fascinating images of the river at work and at play, along with commentary concerning his 30 year career on the rivers, with emphasis upon his time as pilot on the Str. JULIA BELLE SWAIN to his current position as master of the M.V. FRANK T. STEGBAUER, of Southern Towing Company.

We look forward, as always, to seeing everybody on deck for another enjoyable weekend of steamboat cruises, museum tours, group meals and sessions of river history education, fun and fellowship! Capt. Carl is super friendly, very knowledgeable and has given numerous enthusiastic presentations on river topics. A date for the program will be arranged and announced after the first of the year. Stay tuned!

Capt. Carl

I believe that is a Streckfus Steamers magazine he is looking at. Some of you may have met Carl on his job between a steamboat and a diesel towboat: Mate on the RiverExplorer. Carl has quite a way with words and some of us are privileged to receive a monthly email From the Pilothouse, wherein he tells of the previous month's 'adventures' on whichever towboat he has been on. A couple of months ago, I got a very entertaining phone call from the STEGBAUER as they were approaching Louisville - it was Capt. Jay Wieck calling to say he was learning the new propulsion on the STEGBAUER under Capt. Carl, and it seems my name came up. It sounded like those two had known each other for years, rather than days. Carl's JBS days included designing her first website and working in the office during the off season, so he has been around the river and has seen the river business from many perspectives. This will be an entertaining and informative weekend, whenever the date is....

Carl's work aboard new STEGBAUER makes sense to me, now that I know he was previously on the River Explorer's M/V MISS NARI. The MISS NARI was the only Z-drive inland towboat in existance until the m/v's DAVID and FRANK STEGBAUERs came out recently.

Carl's towboating career

I believe Carl worked for LaCrosse harbor towing companies prior to the JBS, not sure however. He has worked for Southern for quite a while and had been captain of a couple of their regular towboats. He was assigned to the FRANK STEGBAUER along with a couple of other company pilots to learn the system, and shortly after, we got word that he was named the Master of that vessel. Obviously his previous experience on the Miss Nari was a plus for him. Carl lives just north of LaCrosse in Onalaska Wisconsin.
