Just two weeks till the S & D annual meeting at Marietta, Ohio. This one promises to be one of the best in recent years. Things get started on Friday evening, the 15th. with the reception at 8 p.m. with all kinds of items on display, John Fryant is to present a slide show on the Str. Saint Genevieve and a guest appearance by a historic figure. Who I don't even know.

Saturday the annual meeting is at 9:30 a.m. and then on to an "old time" picnic" outdoors at the River Musuem, just like the old days at the Boat Club. Lots better than a stuffy hotel room !! Then a steam calliope concert and steam whistles galore. The M/V J.S. Lewis will be open and on display.

Saturday nights dinner speaker is none other than Capt. Clark C. "Doc" Hawley and it just doesn't get better than that !!

Still time to make reservations. You don't have to be a S & D member to attend. Just " come on down".

Cap Bill,

It's been a while since I was at S and D. Can you make reservations through the hotel for the Saturday activities? Anyone have the phone number handy to the Lafayette?

Guess I'll see everyone there!

Telephone # for the Hotel Lafayette is (740) 373-5522. Yes, I think they can take your reservation for the picnic and banquet. Look forward to seeing you there!

Two weeks ago the "Laugh alot" Hotel was booked solid with a wait list. The Holiday Inn out on Ohio Route 7 did have space. If booked and paid for in advance on-line, a Holiday Inn room is about $80.00 a night.

There are several really nice motels at Marietta. A new Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn, Econo-Lodge and Best value Inn, all out on Pike St. at I-77 and the Best Western on Muskingum Dr. Tickets for the picnic and dinner will be available at the Lafayette Hotel lobbys desk on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.

It looks like a big turnout as I've talked lots of members who don't usually attend but will be there this time. Everybody hope for good weather.

I wanted to alert folks that there will be a small surprise birthday celebration at the S & D picnic on Saturday to observe my mother's birthday. Miss Helen (Helen Greene Hughes Prater) just turned 94. (No gifts or anything, just good wishes and a chorus of Happy Birthday will be just dandy.) Her step may be a wee tad slower, but she stays on the move. She spent a week with Forrest and me on the EMPRESS OF THE NORTH ("DQSCo West") in July -- and what a fabulous week that was (!!), complete with wonderful time with Patrick Naumann, Keith Tinnen, and Toots Malloy, and a hug in the airport from Clara Christensen as she got on the plane we were getting off. We also took Mom traveling the Pacific Northwest in our travel trailer for three weeks, perching on ocean bluffs, wending our way through redwoods, picking wild blackberries, and having a grand time. We tried to get her on Capt. Mike's tramp trip but it was booked solid, so she will have to wait till November to get back on her beloved DELTA QUEEN. She is chomping at the bit. What an amazing lady.

We are really looking forward to seeing everyone at S & D this coming week. What a treat to have Doc for our speaker Saturday night! Should be a great weekend.

Hello All,

Renee and I were sure hoping that we could make the big gathering at Marietta this coming weekend, but it just isn't in the cards. I'm really dissapointed because as I mentioned it has been a long while since we last attended. I was really looking forward to getting to see all my friends again, getting to hear "Doc's" presentation and having an opportunity to talk with Cap'n Bill, Cap'n Bob and others. I was especially hoping to be able to talk with Cap'n Nelson Jones about plans for the upcoming Tall Stacks and the possability of bringing some of my whistles down to the river to blow. Oh well, maybe next year. In the meantime I hope everyone has a grand time, looking forward to the report in the reflector on the meeting, picnic, and banquet and hope to see some of you on the river soon.

Regards,
Aaron and Renee Richardson
