It is my unfortunate duty to report on the tragic death of Capt. Norman Maienknecht, President & CEO of Westbank Harbour Services, Sardis, Ohio. Norman owned a number of vessels over the years, including his current boat Eileen Jewel, named after his wife.
I received a phone call early this evening here at Ohio University that he had been operating a tractor near his home south of Sardis and reportedly rolled it causing him to go into cardiac arrest.
Norman was one of the Monroe County River Museum's founding fathers and was instrumental in seeing us get off the ground. Among the items received from Norman is a several ton engine from the Tennessee. He and Eileen have been more than generous to the museum and it is, indeed, a sad evening for our museum family and river community. No words are enough to express our sincere appreciation for all that he has done for us these past few years. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family in this difficult time.
