To all who missed the annual meeting of the Sons & Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen at Marietta this past weekend, you were missed and you missed a great weekend! The weather was great. We had steamboat luminaries such as Capts. Doc Hawley, Gabe Chengery and Jim Blum and his wife Annie. Chief Gary Frommelt and his lovely wife Connie showed up Saturday morning. Dave Tschiggfrie put on his outstanding program on the Steamer AVALON. If you've seen it, Dave has made a few changes and additions, so it was new to those of us who had already seen it once. Dave's wife Debbie and son Jonathan were there also; Jonathan, Dave, Dave Morecraft and Capts. Hawley and Chengery serenaded us on the steam calliope which Capt. Robyn Strickland-Jones had there.
We were pleasantly surprised to see to see Dick and Nancy Prater, but Dick's sister Lil was unable to make it, as was their mother Miss Helen Prater, and they were missed.
We had quite a few first timers this year and enjoyed meeting them.
Saturday afternoon we had a nice "Welcome Home" ceremony for the Str. W.P. SNYDER, Jr. which returned early Friday morning after having received a new hull and paddlewheel at McGinnis shipyard in South Point, OH. The old boat is really looking good! After the SNYDER's welcoming, we planted a tree on the grounds of the river museum in honor of Capt. Nelson Jones.
A most welcome piece of news is that David Tschiggfrie has agreed to assume the position as Editor of the S&D REFLECTOR. We are grateful for David Smith's turn in this position, but he is just too busy with his other endeavors to give the magazine the attention it deserves, and Mr. Tschiggfrie has graciously stepped up to the plate in S&D's time of need. For those of you who may not know Dave Tschiggfrie, take it from me when I tell you we are in for a real treat with him as Editor!
So many nice folks and such a good time was had by all. Those who have never joined us (or who had to miss this year for one reason or another) are encouraged to come to Marietta next year. What a great weekend for friendly river folk!
Wow, sounds like a lot of fun! If I wasn't stuck here "just North of the Arctic Circle" as my Dad says, I would have been there hands down. And congrats to Dave on his new job! I'm glad to hear that the publication is in going in a good direction with this change of power here, and hopefully it can get back to its former glory. I may even have to get the Dow's back on the subscription list! Back on topic, I would love to see some pictures if anyone has them (and I'm sure someone out there does haha)
I am very surprised there is no mention of who the Officers are and who was and wasn't elected to a position. Sounds like one good move was made, I am already excited about the future of the Reflector with such a experienced steamboater and writer at the helm. Now lets see if the rest of the direction will be a positive one. Check book in hand...waiting to see if I need to write one and to whom!
Yes, I'll second, congrats and a big thank you to Dave for taking on the Reflector. No doubt with some occasional input from Jonathan as well.
Guess it's time to renew my subscription as well!
Aaron
Write your check, Travis! New board members include myself and young Taylor Abbott, who masterminds the new river museum up Clarington OH way. (Did I get that first name right?) It was indeed a splended weekend. An excellent slide presentation was given at the Friday night gathering about the work that went into the Snyder hull restoration. I did an informal head count - there were about seventy folks at the Fri. eve. gathering and ninety two at the Saturday banquet. A few more may have come in for Dave's program afterwords. In addition, the attendence at the Ohio River Museum is up considerably, as it is now open at least five days per week. This thanks to the new Friends of the Museums program plus the financial assistance of S & D. I came away from the meeting with a good feeling that we are "turning the corner". Now, those of us who who have extensive knowledge of river history and collections of such material need to support new Editor Dave and CONTRIBUTE to the magazine! I also hope that David Smith will continue to contribute material. His writing ability and knowledge of the history of the towing industry is extensive and valuable.
We now need to get the membership numbers and the meeting attendence back up. Lets try to double those attendence figures next year.
Good job of reporting, Bob, and great news that David will take over the editorship of the Reflector. Captain David Smith is to be congratulated for the outstanding job he did as Editor. This last issue was a keeper, and the covers were unlike anything else the Reflector has done, and having had a cover photo, myself, I was in awe of how well this last issue was presented.
My regrets were given, as issues down at the Decatur yard kept me on the Tennessee River, where I write this from aboard the SUN*FISH.
With this burst, it seems, of renewed enthusiasm for the Sons & Daughters, this might be the right time for each of us to bring in at least one new member.
Well, would'nchaknowit, the only thing I forgot to do this past weekend in Marietta was ask, "Where do I sign up?!"
Was so great to see everyone..
Here are a few videos from Marietta..
Capt. Doc Hawley at the River Museum .

Also, We will be in Paducah,Ky this weekend with Steam CaLLiope 44 for the BBQ on the River festival the 23rd thru the 25th
Thanks for the links to those videos Dave. Also saw several videos on YouTube of Capts. Doc Hawley and Gabe Chengery playing duets on the grand piano in the lobby of the Hotel Lafayette.
Speaking of the Paducah BBQ Festival, I just received a dandy advertising postcard in the mail from the River Discovery Center (formerly known as the River Heritage Museum) at Paducah. Pictured in living color on the card is Travis Vasconcelos, Riverlorian, who will be giving two talks at the center (112 South Water Street) during the BBQ Festival. On Friday (9/24) at 3:00 PM CDT, he will speak on "Showboats and Excursion Boats...Entertainment Comes to the River. This program will include a discussion on the profound effect of river based entertainment on the Jazz music scene.
On Saturday (9/25) again at 3:00 PM CDT, Travis will speak on "Delta Queen - The Story of America's Last Overnight Steamboat". He will trace her career from construction to her current status as a hotel at Chattanooga.
Both talks are in the Founder's Room on the second floor of the center. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted to benefit the museum. There will be towboat tours, line throwing contests and other river doings on Saturday. So, if you're in the Paducah area, stop in for some callyope music and good river talkin'!
Keith,
I ought to hire you as my press agent, thank you for the plug!
I hope my chattering skills come back for this opportunity. I am so excited about it! It has been over 2 years since I have done it and we are gonna have a great time down there in Paducah.
When I get back I will give a full (albeit, one-sided) report on the festivities. It is gonna be a great steamboatin' style weekend! The weather man has a rosy picture painted for Saturday...so if you were thinking about coming down for it, that will be the day to come.
Travis
Can 3 play?
In the video of Love Nest, it would have been appropriate to have had Dave Tschiggfrie on the keyboard too. Have 3 ever played at once?
