Hey everyone,

I have a project coming up that I just need to write a paper on a shipping port, it can be currently active or a historic port. I wanted to do an inland water port, what all would you think would be interesting to do that I could connect back to steamboat history, make it fun for me to write and research. Also it'd be better if I was able to readily access the information pertaining to the port.

Any ideas would be great, hope you all are doing well and thanks!

How about St. Louis?

St. Louis would have all sorts of angles - one end of the St. Louis-St. Paul business, of the St.Louis - New Orleans trade; the excursion boat epicenter of the Mississippi (historically); towing company headquarters; shipyards; Corps of Engineer District hq; Coast Guard office; lots of bridges and issues therewith. And the Mercantile Library for a great reference source!

New Orleans , Without A Doubt !

Greetings From New Orelans !
Mat , without a doubt , New Orelans would be the obvious choice ! Think about of it from any one of a number of perspectives ! New Orleans is strategically placed near the mouth of the largest river system in the country , New Orleans is a bustling sea port , New Orleans is a bustling river port , New Orleans is the hub of all manner of commerce , New Orleans is on three major U.S. interstates , New Orelans is the central location where both brown water and blue water meet and exchange all manner of goods and cargos , New Orelans is near over 25% of this country's oil refinerys , New Orelans is an actual cosmopolotan environment and culture , New Orleans and the Mississippi River is lined with all manner of grain elevators , chemical plants , container docks , mid stream buoy systems and is a strategic military location as well . New Orelans is also the gateway to South America where this city both imports and exports goods from all over the country . New Orleans also has such a rich and varried heritage , culture and history , unlike nay other city in this country !
Name me another port that has so much to offer ??
Smooth sailing !

hi Mat
my suggestion: since this seems to be a small paper 10 to 20 pages and not a dissertation, I would pick a small port and one close to your location so you can visit it and talk to those involved. Even these small ports have their ups and downs and often long histories. have fun and there are hundreds to pick from.
