Shore Excursions

We booked cabin 502 on the American Queen for a 2007 Cincinnati to Pittsburgh Cruse, before AI purchased DQSC. We will have our two teenagers in the cabin with us, apparently without the River Ventures option.

Our stops are:

Maysville, KY (Friday 8 am to 1 pm)
Point Pleasant WV (Saturday 1pm to 5pm, on that Saturday in 2006 they held their Sternwheel Regatta),
Marietta, OH (Sunday 8 am - 5 pm)
Wheeling WV (Monday 8 am - 1 pm)

We have a lot of plans as to what to do in Marietta, and will not be taking any of the official shore excursions.

I am wondering what shore excursions are offered in the other towns, and what recommendations you may have. Our teenagers are thinking, "Great, five days on a river with a boat full of people our grandparents age." It would be nice to give them things to look forward to.

It seems unlikely that the AQ would be in Point Pleasant the same weekend that all of the other boats are using the landing, but I guess it could be done. The original schedule did have us in Point Pleasant on Sunday, and maybe they moved it to have us in town for the Regatta, but that seems like wishful thinking.

Thanks for any ideas.

Hi Bruce,

Check our "Steamboat Traveller"

http://www.steamboats.org/traveller/index.shtml

for Marietta and Point Pleasant.

I haven´t heard anything about continueing the Riverventures Program in 2007 or not. Thought it was quite good (not comparable to ocean going cruise ships) and our 6 years old daughter had much fun over the last three years. I´m not sure if there´s much for a teenager anyway.

Regarding shore tours I can´t help you with that. But anyway they might change them for 2007.

The AQ (and to a lesser degree the MQ) does have places that a teen might hang out and even play cards or an old fashioned board game. I used to also play bottle caps at the callioppe bar with kids of all ages. Mention to the bartender at the start that you want a cup full of bottle caps and one can shoot them like marbles.

Also, many crew enjoy talking to the teenagers to find out what is on their iPOD. The kids may also be playing iPODs or small portable gaming devices too.

West Virginia has some stores that might interest kids. Marietta has the Rossi Pasta place but I don't know how many shops will be open on Sunday.

Shore tours are always priced out as an extra and as a crew member, I only went on a shore tour once. It was complicated for a crew member to get away for that block of time. But, I honestly think the people who put together the tours try very hard to come up with a quality product or experience.

But, even if it doesn't seem like the company caters to the teen market, most of the teen passengers I met had a fabulous time and wanted to come back again and again.

Enjoy : )
