It's cold, wet, white and yucky in upstate New York, but Deb and I are 5 days away from getting on the American Queen. We're starting into the "can't wait" phase and to further the mood a little bit I thought I'd surf and search for steamboatin' stuff...
Anyways I found six wonderful videos, all posted to Youtube very recently. I guess it turns out that our webmaster Franz was the one to post them, even though they don't show up on dot.org just yet. Unless I missed it, it appears he is too modest to "show off" and let us know these exist.
Go here: http://youtube.com/user/steamboatsorg
and look at Delta Queen #1 through #6...DQ #6 is the best, my opinion. And be sure and wear your headphones or turn on the speakers...nice calliope and whistle action. I'm pretty sure I recognize the calliope style as Travis...
Very nice stuff Franz, all taken off the boat, taken at a distance. Is there a story...did you take these? And is it just me or does it seem that all the videos were taken at very different rivers/areas of the country?
Bruno, your assumptions are correct, the videos are taken by me and they're from different locations and from different years. I've uploaded them to Youtube sometime earlier this year.
Video no. 1, obviously, was taken at St. Louis. I don't remember which year this specific one was.
no. 2: is at Cape Girardeau, must have been the great steamboat race of 2003 or 2004.
no. 3 + 4: great steamboat race 2005, video was taken from aboard the Mississippi Queen
no. 5: I'm not sure about this one. It might also be from the 2005 race cruise and is so, the video was taken at Memphis where stayed a couple of hours longer than the DQ did because the water pressure at the place where the MQ was stopping was so low that it took longer to fill the water tanks, therefore the DQ passed us and we didn't see her for the next 2 or 3 days.
no 6: on the Tennessee River at Savannah, TN. I think this was 2002 or 2003.
