While browsing and dreaming the web again, I ran across this auction.

Steam Powered Paddle-Wheel Vessel - 4 Decks and 240 Passenger Capacity in Other Boats | eBay Motors

I am no professional, but it seems to be somewhat the same boiler/generator type as the JBS. I am sure some of you might know more about it.

It's the former ELIZABETH LOUIS, with steam engines from the dismantled towboat DETROITER (ex COP-R-LOY).

It looks as if the QUEEN OF SEATTLE's owners plan on operating her this year. The boat's 2013 schedule is available on line at www.queenofseattle.com, and it appears as if they are already taking reservations for excursions.

Soon I am planning an Alaskan cruise on the CELEBRITY SOLSTICE out of Seattle, and was looking forward to riding the Str. QUEEN OF SEATTLE before the journey up the Inside Passage. Unfortunately, the boat's website no longer operates nor does anyone answer their phone. I'm afraid that there might be one less steam paddlewheeler operating in America now, at least for the short term.

If anyone has more information on the QUEEN OF SEATTLE, please, post it here!

I am curious about the Queen of Seattle too since I was hoping to take a cruise on one of our trips through Seattle.

It is not on the same scale but we do have a little working steamboat here in Juneau that is usually easy for cruisers to catch. When is your cruise?

My, she's cute! I'll be in Juneau on May 20th. If there is any way that I could buy, beg, borrow, or steal a ride on her let me know.

LAURIE ELLEN

Juneau Steamboat Company "Laurie Ellen"
3328 Fritz Cove Rd
Juneau, AK 99801

Main (907) 723-0372

Here is an article about her: Marine Exchange of Alaska - Juneau Steamboat Company's LAURIE ELLEN

For some reason I cannot seem to find the webpage again? It might be best to just give them a call.

May 20th should be a good time to visit Juneau. That is the height of our "dry season" so it might not rain. Bring a rain coat and hat though. Time permitting, you will probably want to visit Mendenhall Glacier, the State Museum, and maybe St. Teresa's or the Mt. Roberts Tram. Even locals hang out at these. The cruise ships usually feed you very well but right off the docks is Tracy's King Crab Shack King Crab Shack - About Us which is excellent. Walk a few blocks out of "Alaska Land" which is the tourist shop district right off the docks all owned and staffed by the cruise ship companies.

What are your other ports?

She's a cute little boat and that cross compound engine is even cuter. I'm going to try to go out on her. The CELEBRITY SOLSTICE also visits Ketchikan and Skagway while in Alaska. To comply with the Jones Act the last evening is spent in Victoria, BC before returning to Seattle.

I just called the phone number that Karl gave (907) 723-0372 and the lady's voice on the other end said that, "We're no longer in business," so so much for that. 🙁

So, any word on what the current status of the ELIZABETH LOUIS/QUEEN OF SEATTLE is?

I drove over to take a look and the LAURIE ELLEN is just plane gone. Depressing. It is not a steam boat but there is a steam locomotive on the White Pass RR line (when it is not broken). It leaves right out of the dock in Skagway but is not cheap ($155.00?)

I have plans to ride the White Pass and Yukon R.R. The scenery is absolutely stunning and the engineering to build the rail road is incredible. Unfortunately, the steam equipment will not be in use the day I'm in Skagway. See Alaska's most popular Shore Excursion: White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad

Skagway road trip

The steam locomotive was broken when were in Skagway last time so we held off. We are planning a road trip through Haines to the Anchorage bowl then back through White Horse (stopping to see the SS KLONDIKE again) and then to Skagway to pick up the return ferry. Hopefully the steam locomotive will be running then.
I cannot quite talk the rest of the convoy into detouring all the way to Dawson City to see the KENO and legendary paddlewheel graveyard. The Paddlewheel Graveyard | Travels With Miranda

Their website seems to be down and I have seen comments about the Queen of Seattle being out of business but nothing that looks official yet(?)

I (mis)understood that the steamboats had been sold and moved to Seattle(?) so I was surprised to see them last Saturday.

Not sure what they are doing just sitting there at the height of our tourist season.
