Capt. Jesse's last DQ trip

Lil, here is a picture from Capt. Fred Way of the DQ leaving Pittsburgh in June1962. Doc said your grandfather was pilot in this picture and that it was the last trip he piloted on the DQ. So I don't know if this was an official watch, or if he was standing in with some friends, but he was still piloting the DQ in 1962...773.jpg

Group photo of Captains...

Lawrence Allen was a great-uncle of mine and I am researching his history. Can anyone provide photos and other info about my great uncle Lawrence and of his nickname "Bo" ..I have found him in the Knoepfle interviews/archives at Oral History Guide - Projects Listing - Archives/Special Collections - University of Illinois at Springfield - UIS and reference to him in photos in the Richard W. Lemen
Photograph Collection
. Don't know if I'll ever get to St. Louis to see those photos though. Any help will be appreciated greatly. tea

this is a great site...

I only discovered this site last week and have not yet fully explored it.
A great site for an extensive collection of old riverboat photos is

First of all, is that Richard, second from the right, front row? (It's been a long time, and I'm guessing that it has been 1965 since I last saw Mr. Steward.) If so, then I worked with seven out of eleven of the legends; if not give me a six.

Front Row. L-R: Albert Kelly, Harry Hamilton, Howard Tate, Richard?, and Bob Zang.

Back Row. R-L: Ernie Wagner, ??, Doc Carr, ??, Jesse Hughes, and ??.

The two fellows framing Captain Jesse really look familiar, and I'll probably feel silly when I find out who they are. Dale, now that you are back, give us some enlightenment.

The photograph dates from about 1963 to 1968 is my take. Wasn't '68 the last year Captain Carr was on the DELTA QUEEN? In 1965, I left the QUEEN for four years in the Air Force, and when I returned in '70, much to my disappointment, Captain Carr was gone.

legends

Isn"t interesting that we all seem to only think of "The legends of the Delta Queen" during the times that we served aboard? I understand and feel much the same way, but am cognizant of the fact that we all feel so deeply connected and entwined with our blessed and fortunate past on the "boats"! We all, during our repective "tours of duty" aboard the steamboats, were fortunate to have lived with, known, and shared time with many of these steamboat "Luminaries". I enjoy and savor the tales of those who came before, of you who were there before, whose tales and accounts of boat life only enrich my own 26 years aboard the Delta Queen. Wasn't it grand; wasn't it the best life we could have wished for? Is it ended now? I think not...Phillip?
