Greetings From New Orleans ,
Yesterday , the 17th. of July I was on the Harvey Canal , visiting the " Remains " of the Str. Mississippi Queen . What made the visit interesting was a conversation I had with the project foreman who represented the current owner of the Str. Mississippi Queen . During the course of our conversation and what made it interesting was what he told me . First of all , he and others that were there , to remove any and all items that could be removed from the boat and was of any value . Secondly , and the Good News is that there is a serious potential buyer for the boat from California and he has invested time , money and personel to survey the boat and to determine if she is worth saving . The Bad News is , I was told that if this potential buyer does not but the boat , the Str. Mississippi Queen will definately be scraped . I was not told of a possible time table for this , other than the fact that everything is pending on the decision of this potential buyer . Time will tell !

Hmm,
If the potential buyer was interested in the boat, wouldn't he/she want all the "Valuable Items" with the boat??
Doesn't look like a very professional group, just pickups backed up to the bank.
Also, interesting that "multiple buyers" has evolved into "one buyer." I would like to hope for a future, but . . . .
Appreciate the update and pics

Ted,

Thanks for the updates.

Do you or anyone have ANY possible contact information of the "potential buyer" or the current owner of the MQ?

Thanks.

Valuable items

David, I can't imagine they needed even one pickup to load all the 'valuable items'. While we would consider the machinery valuable, I don't know what else could have been left on there that was 'valuable'. The NATCHEZ people noticed that each time they went over, at least three times, that there was less and less still onboard. They cited a washer and dryer as an example of what had recently disappeared. Chris, if you need to contact the owner, just walk onto the boat and either he or his representative will probably be there.

valuable items...

As to items left onboard, in each picture that has been posted of her in recent months I have noticed the lights onboard. There seems to be and correct me if I am wrong, Most of the chandeliers are still intact and in place. These seem to be of value especially since we need some crystals for the DQ in the Orleans Room. If she does bought by someone are they going to get even more off with these "valuables" removed? I have talk to the person in Indianna about his plans and he was not too concerned about the missing brass or other items. He talked like the boat being empty inside was better due to gave you a clean slate to build upon. He was more interested in the machenery being in place as well as the superstructure. I don't know, it seems to be as big a mystery as it was before she was sold for scrap. Hope for the best but prepared for the worst. Life moves on...

Str. Mississippi Queen - Valuables ?

Greetings From New Orleans ,
To answer a few questions and concerns over any and all remaining valuables still on the boat , I guess the primary question that begs to be answered is : how and what do you define as valuable ??
First of all , in the Engine Room there are a number of valuables such as electric motors , tools , welding supplies and other miscellaneous items . Also , I did not venture into any of the other machinery spaces such as the Lower Engine Room , the Boiler Room or the Bow Thruster Room and just possibly there could have been some remaining items of value as well . There are also still a number of chandeliers still hanging in many of the public spaces and still in relative good condition . Secondly , on deck there are a number of mooring lines still on their spools and still a number of Fire Hoses as well . There are also the two Search Lights on the boat and I would imagine that they could be refurbished and brought back to working order with little expense . There are also three capstans still on the bow and the stern of the vessel and I was told that the powers that be from the Str. Natchez have shown an interest in them as well .
Furthermore , I've been out to the boat three times and only on the last trip did I meet and speak with anyone of authority and for that matter they even invited me , a total stranger to them , to come on board . For the most part she has been abandoned and once again and left totally unprotected .
What a shame !

Not True ! At This Point !

Greetings From New Orleans ,
At this point there are no plans to scrap the " Remains " of the Str. Mississippi Queen !
Furthermore , at this point there is a concerted effort to purchase the MQ and to both refurbish her and to put her back into service .
More latter as this effort develops !
Smooth Sailing !

Mississippi Queen

From Ted to Ted,thanks for the information.I hope that the Miss. Queen Can be bought and back in Service. We miss it up on the Upper Miss. at St. Paul.It was also mentioned that the American Queen would Have the same fate going to the scrappers. Are both of the Queens in New Orleans yet?On another forum we have been trying to save the EM Ford, A Steamer Cement Carrier that had 100 years of service on the Great Lakes. The scrappers own it now and efforts to save it have fell on deaf ears.It still is intact But that could Change.Oh to See the Delta Queen up here again.I might add that It was our State Reprecentative Oberstar who went to the floor of the House of Representatives and Had his Buddies vote it down to give the Delta Queen an extension of the exempsion It had for years,Because he said it was not safe to run.
