Greetings From New Orleans ,
Today I spent the better part of the day saying HELLO to two old friends , Capt. Finley Frasier ( Pilot ) and Fred Carmichael ( Engineer ) and unfortunately saying GOODBYE to two other old friends , the Str.'s Delta Queen and Mississippi Queen . Both boats are now tied off together , once again , for an indefinate period of time . I was just simply astounded how the MQ has deteriated to nothing better than a rusting hulk of a hull and superstructure and in stark contrast how Good the DQ appeared for the time being at least . The really sad part was to witness the skeleton crew on the DQ removing pictures , brass gages and literally anything of value . Also , the remanents of the crew will all be departing the DQ tomorrow and only a few security guards will now be entrusted to keep both of these National Treasures safe from vandals and the curious . I also had a chance to speak and visit with Capt. John Dugger , the Master of the DQ and we both agreed that at some point someone or some corporation hopfully will step up to the plate and purchase either one , two , or maybe all three of the steamboats , but just when and who is certainly anyone's guess .
Smooth Sailing !
Ted Davisson

She looks so "naked"--is it normal in lay-up to remove all the gauges, etc??
And WHERE are they keeping these parts--I hope better protected than the MQ "jewelry" was.

Here's hoping that your photos do not become the last we see of these three QUEENs together. The DIAMOND LADY, my first gamlin' boat gave me the same fuzzy feelings as did the DQ when I first stepped aboard her, but now she is a torn wreck after spending years in a barge fleet. Surely that same fate will not be the same for the Q's.
Thank you so much for those photos Ted. Sad as they may be they will be cherished like the others. And No David they dont usually take all that stuff down for Layup cause you usually have a deck and engineering crew aboard and watchmen. Years ago when we laid the boats up the watchmen still made rounds all nite and punched keys. I remember when I stayed on as watchman on the MQ when we laid her up at Todd in 78. I was the only one on board all nite everynite. It was kinda spooky.
All this removal of brass and fittings scares me! Its almost like they are planning to have no security on the boats....and where are all of these items being stored...even worse if someone stole the whole lot! Lets all pray someone with money AND brains gets her soon!

Amen, not somebody's garage?...Lets hope and pray that we don't see these items on eBay...
But we do know that the people that originally removed these items were the good guys...
Hey Ted thanks a million for the pictures they are a treasure!
