One night in '08 we were on board our beloved DQ snoring away in our closet, er cabin, when I awoke, as something wasn't quite right. Ah ha!! We're in a lock; and here comes a towboat going the other way in the adjoining lock--but wait! The nameboard on the front of the pilothouse is Elizabeth Dewey! Now, not only does this boat share my last name, it shares my grandmother's first name! By the time I found the camera, she was past us, and I was not in a state of dress to run out on the deck and try to get a photo.
So, does anyone know anything about this modern towboat? I'm just really curious!
Thanks all!

PS Tell me I didn't dream the whole thing too!
Elizabeth Dewey: Twin screw towboat, built 1992 by Avondale Industries, Westwego, LA. 168'X45. Caterpillar 3612 diesels, 7000hp. Reintjes reduction 4.75:1. Kort nozzles. Owned by VGI Marine Services Corp.; operated by National Marine, Inc., New Orleans. Leased 1992-May 1993 by Western Kentucky Navigation. Leased May 1993-May 1998 by Stokes Towing Co., Inc., Greenville, MS. Leased May 1998 by Western Kentucky Navigation, Inc., Paducah, KY. Sold June 1998 to American Commercial Lines LLC, Jeffersonville, IN.
Dave Dewey owned Western Kentucky Navigation, I'm sure Elizabeth is his wife, daughter or granddaughter. Hope this helps...
John
The Elizabeth Dewey might be one of the boats sold to interests in South America, since WKN lost a major contract with ACL (unfortunately). But I'm not 100% sure on that, since ACL owns the boat. I know the Pamela Dewey is headed for S. America now.
Elizabeth Dewey is daughter of Capt. David E. and Pamela Dewey. The boat is owned by American Commercial Lines LLC, Jeffersonville, Ind., but is operated by Western Kentucky Navigation, Inc., Paducah, of which David is president. At present, it is NOT among those going to South America.
Gee, I run a company and am a Captain?? Though I doubt Linda wants to hear about my wife Pamela!!
Very interesting! We are likely related, as most Deweys here in the Colonies are descended from Thomas Dewey who landed here in 1633.
Many thanks for the info. Now if I just had a photo!
I know Grammer would be honored to know of a boat with her name on it (Grammer is how we knew Grandma Dewey).
You can call yourself a captain if you have the necessary Coast Guard license. I have known Capt. Dewey since he was in high school. He started as a deckhand on a harbor boat on the Illinois River and worked his way up. This Dewey family is from Henry, Ill., just north of Peoria. If somebody can tell me how to post a photo here, I will do it. How large an image can it be to post?

Okay, let's give this a try. I took the photo of the ELIZABETH DEWEY the day it was christened, April 3, 1992 at Paducah. Capt. Dewey invited my to the ceremonies. I have several other views taken the same day. If you want to obtain 8x10 enlargements contact me direct at [email protected]. I hope I did this right and the photo is attached. If I bungled the operation, I will send the photo to Steve Huffman and he can post it appropriately.
Dan, I meant no disrespect to those who are Captains--just having fun with the identical names. I doubt I could past the muster!
I would have to dig out my family tree stuff, and it's buried in a box somewheres, but it's quite likely we are cousins XXX times removed, or something like that. My side came from New York area (and wouldn't talk to those of us born west of the Hudson!).
Thanks for posting the picture, I'll have to email you later!
And for us Deweys; we think the Truman - Dewey election was stolen--after all, the newspapers said that Tom won!! Musta been some hanging chads somewheres. . .
Heh Heh heh!!!
(No political agenda there, just a Dewey family joke!)

Hi all, Dan sent me some fine photos of both the Elizabeth Dewey and the Pamela Dewey; they just arrived today. VERY COOL!!! Brightens this dismal, damp day we're having. Yes, we need the rain, but right now the Almond growers need the sun so the blossoms can be visited by the bees to make nuts.
What a great group this is!
