Annie Blum here. I know that this subject ws discussed several months ago, but I have recently heard a rumor that Truman Capote's father was related to a Streckfus or to one of the wives and that is the reason Truman had the middle name of Streckfus. We know that his father worked for Captain Vern in NOLA. Does anyone know anything about this rumor and has anyone even heard this? Could Arch Persons have just liked his employer so much that he gave his son the same name? Did he owe money to his employer?
Hi, Annie. Capt. Doc Hawley has related that story to me more than once. My understanding is that he admired the Streckfuses and that is why he gave Truman that middle name.
Truman Streckfus Capote
Yes, that is what Doc has always said, it was pure admiration for the Streckfus family and business. Arch Persons was a crack advance man for them and good businessman in general. If he owed any money, I doubt if it entered into his son's middle name. Its interesting on EBay, when you type in "STreckfus" and click on title and descriptions, you get many Capote items because his middle name is included in the postings.
Thank you, Bob and Judy, for your input. I really do not think now, that Arch was a relative. What an interesting item regarding Ebay.
