Oops! something went PFFT! while typing the above.

Salvage of the COSTA CONDORDIA wreck to begin in early May, subject to approval from the Italian authorities, expected to take about 12 months with the ship "in one piece." TITAN SALVAGE, in concert with the Italian firm MICOPERI, will strictly observe all environmental concerns with no impact on the summer tourist season on the isle of Giglio. Once floated, the wreck will be towed to an Italian port and dealt with in accordance with the requirements of the Italian authorities. Removal of the ship's fuel and other lubricants, liquids was completed March 24. No word so far if the half billion dollar ship will be restored/rebuilt for future service. The ship sank on Jan 13th after hitting a rock shelf off the isle of Giglio. No doubt there will be plenty of coverage on your TV.

TITAN SALVAGE is an American-owed salvage/wreck-removal company with offices in Pompano Beach, Florida; East Sussex, England; and Singapore. Cheers!

*RE: COSTA CONCORDIA*
Hi, Lexie,
Last I read the sentiment was they had recovered all the fatalities from the CONCORDIA totaling 32. Divers entered the ship almost immediately. Took some time to recover the last 7 people. Differences in languages added confusion with passengers and crew. They had to track people down in the nearby town who'd been taken in by local families for dry clothes, hot drinks etc. The Mediterranean can be miserable in the winter. Peak season there is roughtly May to October, early November.

Thought that there were still two unaccounted for. Think it was the couple from Minnesota. My count is probably a week behind.

The President of Costa is "retiring" soon. New European "voluntary standards" just adopted will require many, many more life-jackets in "core" passenger areas. UN IMO will probably get their 2 cents worth in also.

There are still 2 people missing. They were able to recover 5 bodies which have been identified and include the couple from Minnesota.

Pier Luigi Foschi is retiring but that has been planned long before as he´s turing 65 this year. He only thought about not retiring (or later) because of the accident. Also already planned by last fall was that Michael Thamm (currently CEO of AIDA, a German cruise company "owned" by Costa "owned" by Carnival) is following Foschi.

*RE: COSTA CONCORDIA*
Hi, Carmen and steamboating colleagues:
Thanks for mention above RE: two still missing CONCORDIA passengers. Unfortunate for all aboard, officers, crew, owning compaines. No surprise that within the blink of an eye certain 'scams' cropped up for cash settlements not deserved. The interlocking companies, owners, directors like layers in a cake. CEO and other top management of owning CARNIVAL corporation tried to distance themselves as much as possible. They soon learned that the "buck stops here" with them. The eventual court case will be very interesting to observe.

Yes, Carmen, I've had experience with German owned AIDA. One very interesting operation isn't it? Cheers!

And Carnival-America closed up today. Don't know what Carnival UK did.

I've known Jerry for a number of years now and yes, he has been identified. He was a great guy with a wonderful sense of humor. He is already missed. Here's the link to the page their family put together during this time, if anyone is interested. Heil Family Update
